Chapter 5 - The Chase through the City

The sharp pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire shattered the quiet of the parking garage.

Sparks flew off the concrete pillar right above my head as glass exploded from Marcus's rear windshield.

"Get down!" Marcus yelled, slamming his foot onto the gas pedal.

The sedan’s tires squealed against the slick garage floor as we accelerated toward the exit ramp. Behind us, the heavy black SUV roared in pursuit, smashing through the plastic parking gate without slowing down.

I ducked beneath the dashboard, clutching the black burner phone Detective Carter had given me. "Marcus! They're right behind us!"

"I see them!" Marcus swerved wildly onto the rain-slicked city avenue, cutting off a yellow taxi. Horns blared all around us as streetlights blurred past in a smear of orange and white.

I dialed Detective Carter’s number on the burner phone.

"Carter! They found us!" I screamed into the receiver over the roar of the engine. "We're being chased out of the hospital garage by a black SUV!"

"Evelyn! Where are you?" Carter’s voice came through crackling with static.

"Heading north on 5th Avenue toward the highway!" I yelled. "They have guns!"

"Hold on! I'm coordinating with state troopers now, but you’re six minutes away from our nearest unit! Get off the main avenue!"

Marcus took a sharp left into a narrow alleyway between two tall brick warehouses. The sedan’s side mirror clipped a metal dumpster with a loud CRASH, sending sparks flying through the darkness.

The black SUV followed without hesitation, its front bumper slamming hard into our rear fender. The impact hurled me forward, my seatbelt locking tight around my chest, knocking the air out of my lungs.

"They're trying to pit-maneuver us!" Marcus shouted, his hands white-knuckled on the steering wheel.

"Marcus, turn here!" I pointed at an opening leading onto an elevated industrial bridge over the river.

Marcus yanked the wheel right. The sedan fish-tailed across the wet metal deck of the bridge.

The SUV rammed us again—harder this time.

The rear tires of our car lost traction entirely. The sedan spun in a violent 360-degree circle, crashing rear-first into the heavy steel guardrail of the bridge with a sickening crunch of metal.

My head snapped back against the headrest, white light flashing across my eyes.

Silence fell over the bridge, except for the steam hissing from our crushed radiator and the steady pit-pat of rain on the hood.

"Marcus... Marcus, are you okay?" I gasped, dizzy and disoriented.

Marcus was slumped over the steering wheel, blood trickling from a cut above his brow. He groaned, shaking his head. "The car... the engine's dead..."

Through the cracked windshield, I saw the black SUV pull up thirty feet away.

The driver’s side door opened.

A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out into the rain. In his right hand, he held a heavy tactical pistol with a long suppressor attached to the barrel.

He walked toward our wrecked vehicle with slow, deliberate steps, completely unbothered by the rain or the flashing lights in the distance.

As he reached the hood of our car, he paused, looking directly at me through the shattered glass.

He raised his left hand to adjust his coat collar.

Tattooed across his left hand was a circle with a lightning bolt through it.

It was the man who had been in my house with my child.

My heart stopped. I reached for the door handle, but the frame was crushed shut.

The man raised his pistol, aiming it directly through the driver's side window at Marcus's head.

Suddenly, glaring blue and red lights illuminated the bridge as three state trooper vehicles rounded the far corner, sirens wailing at maximum volume.

The masked man hesitated for a split second, lowered his weapon, and tossed a small black metallic device onto the hood of our car.

He turned, jumped back into the black SUV, and sped away across the bridge, vanishing into the night just as the police cruisers arrived.

On the hood of our car, the black metallic device began to beep with a steady, rhythmic pitch.

Beep... beep... beep...

"Evelyn..." Marcus gasped, staring at the hood in pure horror. "That's a thermite charge! Get out! GET OUT NOW!"
