Chapter 3 - Shadows in the ER

The ICU waiting room at St. Jude’s Hospital smelled of hospital-grade antiseptic and stale floor wax.
I sat in a vinyl chair under the hum of fluorescent lights, my hands clamped around a warm paper cup of untouched tea. Every time the double doors opened, my posture snapped straight, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Doctor Vance, a tall woman with tired eyes and graying hair, finally walked toward me at 5:20 p.m.
"Mrs. Mercer?"
I scrambled to my feet. "How are they? Please, tell me."
"Your daughter Chloe was extremely lucky," Dr. Vance said softly, offering a reassuring smile. "Because she called you and stayed near the floor where the oxygen density was slightly higher, her exposure time was minimized. We treated her with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. She’s awake, stable, and asking for you."
A massive sob tore from my throat as relief washed over me. "And Daniel? My husband?"
Dr. Vance’s smile faded slightly, replaced by a guarded expression. "Your husband suffered prolonged exposure. His brain was deprived of proper oxygen levels for over twenty minutes before EMS arrived. He is currently in a medically induced coma to prevent brain swelling. The next forty-eight hours will be critical."
"Can I see them?" I begged.
"Chloe is in room 304. You can visit her now, but only one visitor at a time for safety," Dr. Vance replied.
I rushed down the hallway to room 304.
Chloe looked so small in the huge hospital bed, wires taped to her chest and a pulse oximeter clipped to her finger. But when her big brown eyes found mine, she reached her arms out.
"Mommy!"
I fell into the chair beside her bed and wrapped my arms around her gently, careful not to hit any IV tubes, crying quietly into her soft hair. "I’m here, baby. Mommy's here. You were so brave."
"Mommy... is Dad okay?" she whimpered.
"He’s sleeping, sweetie. The doctors are taking good care of him," I lied smoothly, fighting back my tears. "Chloe... earlier, you said someone was in the house. Can you tell me what happened?"
Chloe lowered her head, her hand tightening around my fingers.
"I got off the bus," she whispered, her voice trembling. "When I unlocked the front door, the house smelled funny like flowers and metal. I saw Dad on the floor in the kitchen. I ran to him, but... someone came out of the laundry room."
My breath hitched. "Who was it?"
"A tall man with a dark jacket and a hat," Chloe said, tears spilling down her cheeks. "He didn't hurt me, Mom. He just picked up Dad’s car keys from the counter and said, 'Go to your room, little girl, and don't make a sound.' But I was scared... so I grabbed my smartwatch under my coat and called you."
"Did you see his face, baby?"
Chloe shook her head. "He wore a black mask over his mouth. But... he had a tattoo on his hand. A circle with a lightning bolt through it."
My mind raced. A circle with a lightning bolt.
Before I could ask more, the door to the room creaked open.
Detective Carter from the police department stepped inside, his face grim. He motioned for me to come out into the corridor.
I kissed Chloe’s forehead, told her to rest, and stepped outside, shutting the door behind me.
"Mrs. Mercer," Detective Carter said in a low voice. "We just finished inspecting your house and pulling your husband's personal files from his home office."
"Did you find who did this?" I demanded.
"It’s complicated," Carter replied, pulling a clear plastic bag from his coat. Inside was Daniel’s wallet. "We found this hidden inside the air filter compartment of your husband's car. But more importantly, we ran a background check on the company files your husband was looking at before he collapsed."
Carter leaned closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"Your husband wasn't just auditing accounting records at Vanguard Bio-Tech, Evelyn. Two days ago, he filed an anonymous whistle-blower complaint with the federal government accusing his CEO, Julian Vance, of illegal human trial testing."
I blinked in shock. "Julian Vance? That's... that's the CEO of Vanguard!"
"Yes," Carter said. "And there’s something else. The doctor who just spoke to you... Dr. Vance? She isn't just an ICU physician here."
May you like
My blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"
"Dr. Vance is Julian Vance’s sister," Carter said, his eyes darkening. "And she just gave permission to transfer your husband to a private clinic thirty miles away without court authorization."
