Part 2: The VIP Suite Nightmare and the First Taste of Retribution

The crystal chandeliers of The Sapphire Room suddenly felt blindingly harsh. Michael Bennett stood frozen in place. The black corporate card—the very token he considered his golden ticket to an elite lifestyle—now lay uselessly on the waiter's silver tray.
"Declined." The bright red letters on the POS terminal screen felt like a physical slap to his inflated ego.
"There must be some mistake here," Michael barked, trying to keep his voice low to avoid alarming the ultra-wealthy patrons at adjacent tables, but panic bled heavily into his tone. "Do you have any idea what card this is? This is the unlimited-limit account of the Salazar-Bennett Interior Design Group! Check your internet connection immediately!"
The VIP lounge manager, a sophisticated middle-aged man in a tailored black suit named Edward, stepped forward with a practiced, hollow smile. He had seen plenty of overextended high-rollers, but this case was special.
"Mr. Bennett," Edward said, his voice flat but perfectly audible. "We have verified this across three separate banking gateways. It is not a network error. The rejection code reads 'Account Blocked by Owner.' Not only this card, but all supplementary cards tied to this membership ID were completely revoked exactly forty minutes ago."
Vanessa Collins, the mistress who had been smirking triumphantly outside the courthouse just hours prior, watched her face turn completely sour. The $200,000 sapphire necklace still sparkled around her neck, but it suddenly felt as heavy as an iron noose.
"Michael, what is going on?" Vanessa hissed through gritted teeth, her manicured fingers digging viciously into his sleeve. "You said tonight was our night! You said I could have whatever I wanted! The violinist, the dinner... are you seriously going to let me be humiliated like this?"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Michael snapped, sweat beading on his forehead. He frantically whipped his personal credit card out of his wallet. "Use this one. Hurry."
Edward took the card and swiped it. The machine emitted a sharp, cold beep-beep. "My apologies, sir. This card indicates it has exceeded its limit. The current balance is insufficient to cover this $300,000 bill."
Whispers began to ripple through the room. The Sapphire Room was the playground of Chicago's elite. Mocking and curious stares from neighboring tables locked onto them. People were beginning to recognize Michael—the son-in-law who had just been cast out of the Salazar dynasty.
"Isn't that Michael? The cheating husband caught red-handed last week?" "Turns out he was funding his mistress with his ex-wife's money, and now his allowance is cut. How pathetic!"
Michael felt his blood run cold. He suddenly remembered Mariana’s icy expression outside the courthouse, and the piercing gaze of her father, Gustavo Salazar. “And you seem terribly sure of yourself,” Mariana's words echoed in his mind like a curse.
"Mariana... that bitch..." Michael muttered, grinding his teeth so hard they bled. He realized he had walked straight into a trap. He had assumed Mariana was too fragile, that she would collapse after the divorce hearing, giving him a few days to siphon assets from their joint accounts before she could react. But he had severely underestimated Gustavo. The former federal financial fraud investigator never left a loophole for predators.
"Mr. Bennett," Edward’s voice dragged Michael back to his grim reality. "If you cannot settle this bill within the next ten minutes, club policy dictates we must involve the police for high-end service fraud. Additionally, the necklace on the young lady must be surrendered immediately."

"No! This is my gift!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching the sapphire necklace.
"Give it here!" Michael spun around and violently yanked the necklace off Vanessa's neck, making her scream in pain. The suave, chivalrous facade of the upper-class gentleman shattered in an instant, leaving behind a desperate, pathetic man trying to claw back a shred of dignity. He threw the necklace onto the silver tray and shakily pulled out his phone. He had to call Mariana. He had to force her to unlock the cards, or his career and reputation in Chicago would burn to ash tonight.
