Part 3: The Midnight Call and the Killing Blow

Across the city, in a quiet penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, the atmosphere was serene. I sat on a plush leather sofa, holding a glass of red wine without drinking it. My father, Gustavo, stood by the massive glass window, calmly wiping his reading glasses.

My banking app was a waterfall of notifications: 8:42 p.m.: Authorization request for $302,450 at The Sapphire Room DECLINED. 8:44 p.m.: Authorization request for $15,000 at The Sapphire Room DECLINED. 8:45 p.m.: Personal card ending in 4092 permanently locked due to suspected fraud.

Looking at those lines of text, I felt neither tears nor laughter. A strange, liberating wave of relief washed over me. For nine years, I had been blind, sacrificing my youth, wealth, and intellect to feed a parasite masquerading as a husband.

Right on cue, the screen lit up with the caller ID: Michael. I looked up at my father. He didn't turn around, simply stating: "Put it on speaker, sweetheart. Let him show his true colors."

I hit answer. Instantly, Michael's enraged roar filled the room, backed by the ambient noise of a restless crowd and Vanessa's muffled sobbing.

"Mariana! Have you lost your mind?! What did you do to my accounts?! Unlock the cards right now! Do you have any idea where I am? I'm at the Sapphire Room! You are humiliating me in front of all my associates and friends!"

I took a slow sip of my wine, my voice dead calm. "Your accounts? Michael, are you confused? That black card is registered under my corporation. And that supplementary personal card draws from my late mother's inheritance. Nothing in those accounts belongs to you. The judge finalized the divorce at 4:00 p.m. You and I have absolutely no legal connection anymore."

"You..." Michael gasped for air, clearly hiding in a restroom stall to make the call. "We were literally married five minutes before that! You can't be this ruthless! I gave nine years of my life to that company!"

"You 'contributed' by embezzling corporate funds to buy Vanessa a condo? Or by using company cards to finance five-star trips to the Maldives last summer?" I cut him off, every word sharp as a razor. "Michael, did you forget what my father did for a living? Did you honestly think you were hiding those discrepancies all these years?"

Michael’s voice suddenly dropped, shifting to a manipulative, pleading tone he often used to control me. "Mari, listen to me... I know I messed up. But let's keep business separate. If I don't pay this bill tonight, the police are coming. If my reputation is ruined, it will tank your company’s image too. You don't want the tabloids screaming 'Former Salazar-Bennett Director Arrested for Fraud' tomorrow, do you? Just wire me $300,000. Just this once, for old time's sake."

At that moment, my father stepped forward. He leaned toward the phone, his deep, authoritative voice cutting through the line like a gavel. "Michael Bennett. This is Gustavo."

The other end went dead silent. The heavy silence of absolute terror.

"Did you think tonight was just about a couple of locked credit cards?" My father smiled, a cold expression devoid of warmth. "Thirty years with the federal government taught me one thing: greedy men never stop at one crime. While you were busy celebrating your fake victory outside the courthouse, an independent forensic audit team was already inside your office. They uncovered the entire paper trail of the shell companies you set up to siphon major Salazar-Bennett design contracts, funneling the profits directly into your and Vanessa's private accounts."

"No... that's impossible..." Michael stammered.

"The case file was hand-delivered to the Cook County Prosecutor's Office at 5:00 p.m. sharp," my father continued, nailing the coffin shut on Michael's career. "That $300,000 bill at the Sapphire Room tonight was just a little theater I arranged for you. The real number you need to worry about is the $2.5 million charge for corporate fraud and grand larceny. Have a wonderful evening, Mr. Bennett."

My father reached down and tapped the end call button.
