Part 4: A New Dawn and Total Collapse

The next morning, Chicago woke up to a beautiful, sunny day, but for Michael Bennett, it was absolute doomsday.
The city's financial and social tabloids exploded with the news. Even before the grand larceny charges hit the press, the fiasco at The Sapphire Room the night before had turned Michael and Vanessa into the laughingstock of the high-society circuit. Video clips captured by high-end bloggers showing Michael being escorted out of the club by security, alongside a crying Vanessa with smeared makeup, went viral within hours.
But the worst was yet to come.
By 10:00 a.m., an official criminal indictment was served at Michael’s rented apartment. All his personal assets were frozen pending the investigation. Major clients who had only signed contracts out of respect for the Salazar name pulled out of their agreements with Michael, slap-marking him with massive breach-of-contract penalties.
I stood in my newly renovated office on the 45th floor of a downtown skyscraper. The "Salazar-Bennett" signage had been stripped away, replaced by a singular, proud new brand: Salazar Design.
My secretary walked in, placing a folder on my desk. "Ms. Mariana, Michael’s attorney just called. He is begging for a settlement meeting. He says Michael is willing to sign over all remaining joint property claims, including the shared apartment, if you drop the criminal complaint."
I looked out the glass window at the city skyline. Nine years of marriage had cost me a brutal lesson in human nature. But thanks to my father's sharp foresight outside that courthouse—the exact moment captured in "dreamina-2026-06-27-9289-Visual Context_ A modern, upscale street....mp4" when he gripped my arm and told me to cut off his access—I had saved myself from being buried under the debris of his greed.
"Tell his lawyer," I turned around, offering a calm, unyielding smile, "that I don't negotiate with criminals. Let the justice system do its job."
Later that afternoon, I took a walk along the park with my father. The breeze from Lake Michigan was refreshing. I looped my arm through his, feeling the profound strength of the man who had protected me my whole life.
"Do you regret those nine years, sweetheart?" my father asked, looking straight ahead.

"I don't regret them, Dad," I replied, my heart completely light. "Those nine years taught me exactly how resilient I am. And most importantly, they reminded me that while someone can steal your money or your trust, they can never strip away your intellect or your dignity."
Behind us, the shadows of the past had dissolved. Michael Bennett and Vanessa Collins finally got exactly what they deserved: each other, but stripped of luxury, facing a long, cold future behind bars. As for me, Mariana Salazar, my real life was just beginning.
