Chapter 4 - My Father Knew the Brakes Would Fail

Rafael didn't speak for almost a minute.

Elena waited.

Celeste stared at him.

Mateo moved quietly closer to Elena's wheelchair.

Finally Rafael said:

"I didn't sabotage your car."

Elena's laugh was bitter.

"That's a very specific denial."

"I didn't."

"Then why would Adrian tell me to ask you?"

Rafael looked down.

"Because I knew something was wrong with it."

The room exploded.

Celeste stood.

"You knew?"

"Not before the crash."

"When?"

"After."

Elena felt her chest tighten.

"What did you find?"

Rafael walked toward his desk.

He opened a drawer.

Removed a folder.

"I hired a private investigator two days after the accident."

Elena stared at him.

"You never told the police."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I didn't trust them."

"You trusted Whitmore."

Rafael flinched.

Elena continued.

"What did the investigator find?"

Rafael handed her photographs.

The brake line had been cut.

Cleanly.

Professionally.

Mateo swore.

Elena's hands shook.

"So you knew someone tried to kill me."

"I knew the crash wasn't an accident."

"And you said nothing."

"I hired security."

"You said nothing to me."

"You were barely conscious."

"For seven months?"

Rafael's face hardened.

"I was trying to find who did it."

"No. You were controlling information."

"Because people were disappearing!"

He slammed his hand down.

"My investigator vanished three days after sending that report."

Silence.

Elena looked at the photographs again.

"Why didn't you go public?"

"Because I received this."

Another envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Elena unconscious in her hospital bed.

Taken from inside the room.

On the back:

SHE SURVIVED ONCE. KEEP DIGGING AND SHE WON'T AGAIN.

Elena stopped breathing.

Mateo whispered:

"Somebody had access to the hospital."

"Whitmore," Elena said.

Rafael nodded.

"I thought so."

"But Adrian said Whitmore didn't cause the crash."

"Then maybe someone else used him."

Elena looked at her father.

"What else are you hiding?"

Rafael's silence answered.

"Dad."

He sat.

"Your mother didn't die from natural heart failure."

Celeste closed her eyes.

Elena felt the room disappear.

"What?"

"We suspected."

"We?"

"Celeste and I."

Elena looked at her aunt.

Celeste cried silently.

Rafael continued.

"Isabel collapsed after confronting Whitmore."

"When?"

"At the hospital."

"What did toxicology show?"

"Nothing."

"Because Navarro Medical Center tested it."

Rafael nodded.

Elena's voice broke.

"You buried that too."

"I was trying to protect—"

"Don't."

Her voice cut through him.

"Don't say protect me."

She rolled backward.

Mateo reached toward her.

Elena pulled away.

"No."

She needed air.

She needed distance.

She wheeled herself outside.

The winter garden was empty.

Cold air hit her face.

She stopped beside the fountain.

Her mother.

Her accident.

Her father.

Everyone had been living inside secrets.

Mateo joined her several minutes later.

He stayed behind her.

Didn't touch.

"You can hate him."

"I do."

"For now."

She looked at the frozen garden.

"He knew someone tried to kill me."

"Yes."

"And still let Whitmore treat me."

"Yes."

"How stupid is that?"

"Very."

Elena laughed once through tears.

"You're supposed to make me feel better."

"I've never been especially good at that."

She finally looked at him.

"Why are you here?"

"Because you pay well."

She almost smiled.

Then he became serious.

"And because I know what it feels like when someone else decides your future for you."

Elena frowned.

Mateo rarely discussed his past.

"What happened?"

He sat on the stone ledge.

"Afghanistan."

She waited.

"I was a combat medic."

"I knew military rehab. Not combat medic."

"Same body. Different chapter."

"What happened?"

He looked away.

"Convoy explosion."

"Were you hurt?"

"Yes."

"How badly?"

"Bad enough that a surgeon told me I'd never use my left hand normally again."

Elena looked at his hand.

Strong.

Steady.

"What happened?"

"I found another doctor."

She smiled faintly.

"That's your inspiring lesson?"

"No."

He looked at her.

"The lesson is the first doctor wasn't evil. He was wrong."

Elena understood.

"And Whitmore?"

"He may be both."

The next morning, police traced Adrian's call.

An abandoned veterinary facility ninety miles away.

They found restraints.

IV equipment.

Blood.

No Adrian.

But they recovered surveillance footage.

Adrian had been held there.

Along with someone else.

A woman.

Older.

Silver-haired.

Her face never fully visible.

Elena watched the footage.

Something about the woman's posture felt familiar.

Then the woman turned slightly.

A profile.

Elena froze.

"Stop."

The detective paused the video.

Rafael stopped breathing.

Celeste whispered:

"No."

Elena stared.

The woman's cheek.

The shape of her nose.

The small scar beneath her ear.

Impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

Elena whispered:

"Mom."

Rafael staggered backward.

Elena turned toward him.

"You buried her."

He couldn't speak.

Elena looked at the frozen image again.

Her dead mother.

Alive.

In a room where Adrian had been held.

The timestamp was six days earlier.

Not eleven years ago.

Six days.

Elena's mother hadn't predicted danger and died.

She had survived.

Someone had hidden her for four years.

Mateo whispered:

"Elena..."

She couldn't answer.

On the surveillance screen, Isabel Navarro lifted her head.

Looked directly into the camera.

May you like

And mouthed two words.

Find me.
