Chapter 5 - The Woman We Buried Wasn't My Mother

They opened Isabel Navarro's grave two days later.

Elena attended.

Rafael didn't want her there.

That was exactly why she went.

Cold rain fell across the cemetery.

Workers raised the coffin.

Celeste stood under an umbrella, shaking.

Mateo remained beside Elena.

The medical examiner opened the casket inside a private facility.

There were human remains.

Rafael exhaled.

Then the examiner looked confused.

"What?"

Elena asked.

"We need DNA."

Three hours later, preliminary testing showed the truth.

The woman buried as Isabel Navarro was not Elena's mother.

She was approximately the same age.

Same height.

But unrelated.

Rafael sat in complete silence.

Elena looked at him.

"Who did we bury?"

"I don't know."

"How did you not know?"

"The coffin was closed."

"Why?"

"Whitmore said Isabel had severe facial trauma after collapsing."

Elena laughed bitterly.

"From heart failure?"

Rafael closed his eyes.

"I should have questioned it."

"Yes."

He didn't defend himself.

That was new.

The investigation became federal.

Kidnapping.

Medical fraud.

Human experimentation.

Possibly murder.

Adrian was still missing.

Isabel was alive.

Somewhere.

The mysterious Project Aurora became central.

Mateo spent nights reading old medical research.

Elena trained.

Harder than ever.

Without Whitmore's medication, sensation returned slowly.

Pins and needles.

Pain.

Then muscle activation.

For the first time, Elena hated pain less.

Pain meant connection.

Mateo placed her inside standing bars.

"Ready?"

"No."

"Good."

He locked her knees.

"Push."

Elena gripped the rails.

Her arms shook.

"Come on."

"I am."

"You're thinking."

"I have to think."

"No. Your body knows more than you think."

She pushed.

Her legs trembled.

For half a second, weight transferred through them.

Elena gasped.

Mateo caught her as she collapsed.

"Again."

"You're insane."

"Again."

She laughed.

Then tried.

By the end of the session, Elena stood for three seconds.

Three.

She cried for twenty minutes.

Mateo sat beside her on the floor.

Neither spoke.

Then Elena kissed him.

It happened without permission.

Without planning.

Her hand caught his shirt.

His mouth met hers.

For a moment, the mansion disappeared.

Then Mateo pulled back.

"Elena."

"I'm sorry."

"No."

He breathed.

"I'm not sorry."

"Then why did you stop?"

"Because you're vulnerable."

Elena's face hardened.

"There it is."

"That's not what I mean."

"Everyone thinks I'm fragile."

"I don't."

"Then kiss me."

He stared.

She held his gaze.

Mateo kissed her again.

This time slowly.

Deliberately.

When they separated, Elena whispered:

"Still vulnerable?"

"Extremely dangerous."

That evening, Celeste received a package.

No return address.

Inside was Adrian's watch.

And a flash drive.

The video began with Adrian seated in darkness.

Bruised.

Alive.

"Mom."

Celeste covered her mouth.

"If you're seeing this, they let me record it."

Adrian looked toward someone off-camera.

Then continued.

"Elena, Whitmore is not the person in charge."

Elena leaned closer.

"The real operation started before I was born."

Rafael whispered:

"Thomas."

Celeste froze.

Adrian looked directly at the camera.

"My father."

Elena frowned.

Thomas Navarro.

Celeste's husband.

Adrian's father.

Officially dead for eighteen years.

A laboratory explosion.

No body recovered.

Adrian continued.

"Dad survived."

Celeste began sobbing.

"He created Project Aurora with Grandpa. When the trials were shut down, he continued privately."

Rafael looked sick.

Adrian continued.

"Isabel discovered him years later. She threatened to expose everything. Whitmore helped fake her death."

Elena's nails dug into her palm.

"Mom knew she'd be taken."

Mateo nodded.

"That's why she wrote the letter."

The video continued.

"Thomas needs Elena because Isabel's successful response wasn't random."

Elena stopped breathing.

"Her genetics made Aurora work."

Mateo whispered:

"And Elena inherited them."

Adrian nodded on screen as if answering.

"Elena is the only known person with the same marker."

Rafael sat down.

Adrian's final words changed everything.

"Dad doesn't want Elena dead."

Pause.

"He wants her disabled."

Celeste whispered:

"Why?"

The answer came.

"Because Aurora works best on recent neurological damage."

Elena felt cold.

The accident.

The medication.

The diagnosis.

Someone had intentionally created the perfect test subject.

Her.

Adrian continued.

"If Elena regains function naturally, Dad loses his chance."

Mateo's expression hardened.

"That's why Whitmore kept suppressing you."

Elena looked down at her legs.

The entire thing made monstrous sense.

Thomas didn't want an heir.

He wanted proof.

A daughter from a genetically favorable patient.

Recently injured.

Medically controlled.

Helpless.

Adrian's recording ended with an address.

An old Navarro property.

A mountain lodge in Virginia.

Federal agents searched it.

Empty.

But they found something important.

A wall map.

Three locations marked.

The mansion.

Navarro Medical Center.

And a rehabilitation facility in Maine.

The same facility where money linked to Project Aurora had recently been sent.

Elena pointed.

"Mom."

Agents raided it the next morning.

They found eleven patients.

Adrian.

Alive.

And Isabel Navarro.

Elena watched through the mansion window as a federal vehicle approached.

The door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Silver hair.

Thin.

Older.

But alive.

Elena couldn't move.

Not because of paralysis.

Because the little girl inside her had returned.

Isabel looked toward the mansion.

Then toward Elena.

Her hand covered her mouth.

"Ellie."

That childhood nickname broke everything.

Elena wheeled forward.

Fast.

Isabel ran.

They met halfway across the marble foyer.

Elena fell from the chair.

Her mother dropped to the floor.

They held each other.

Four lost years collapsed into one impossible embrace.

Rafael stood across the room crying.

Isabel looked at him.

Her face changed.

Not love.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

"You knew enough to find me."

Rafael whispered:

"I failed."

"Yes."

He cried harder.

Then Isabel looked at Elena.

"There isn't much time."

Elena frowned.

"What?"

"Thomas knows I'm free."

"Let him."

Isabel shook her head.

"No."

She touched Elena's cheek.

"He'll come for you now."

That night, every light in Navarro Estate went out at exactly 2:13 a.m.

And somebody locked the gates from the inside.
