Chapter 9 - The Man I Refused to Lose

The address led to an abandoned theater outside Baltimore.
Thomas chose it deliberately.
No nearby homes.
Limited access.
Underground maintenance tunnels.
Adrian knew the building.
Thomas had used it as a meeting site years earlier.
Federal agents prepared a rescue.
Elena insisted on being part of the bait.
Bell, the lead agent, refused.
Elena stared at him.
"He kidnapped Mateo because of me."
"That does not make you tactical personnel."
"He won't bring Mateo out unless he sees me."
Bell hated it.
But she was right.
They built a plan.
Tracker sewn into Elena's coat.
Microphone inside her necklace.
Agents in surrounding buildings.
Adrian monitoring communications.
Elena entered alone in her wheelchair.
She chose the chair intentionally.
Thomas wanted symbolism.
Fine.
She would give him what he expected.
The theater smelled of dust and wet wood.
A spotlight clicked on.
Mateo sat center stage.
Hands tied.
Face bruised.
Alive.
His eyes found Elena.
"No."
Thomas stepped from the darkness.
"Very touching."
Elena kept her voice steady.
"Let him go."
"Stand."
She froze.
Thomas smiled.
"I want to see it."
Elena stared.
"Why?"
"Because everyone keeps telling me you recovered."
"You're watching."
"No."
He pointed toward the stage.
"Stand without your therapist."
Mateo shouted:
"Don't!"
Thomas struck him.
Elena's hands tightened.
"Stop."
"Then stand."
Elena locked her wheelchair.
Placed her feet.
Breathed.
Thomas watched.
She pushed upward.
Her right leg trembled violently.
Then held.
She stood.
Thomas's expression became something Elena hadn't expected.
Wonder.
Pure scientific hunger.
"Beautiful."
She felt sick.
"Let him go."
Thomas walked closer.
"Do you know what you are?"
"A person."
"A breakthrough."
"No."
"You have your mother's response profile. The same neural recovery pattern."
"Then study my records."
"I need tissue."
"Take blood."
"More."
Mateo shouted again.
Thomas ignored him.
"You could change medicine forever."
Elena looked around.
"How many people did you hurt telling yourself that?"
Thomas's face hardened.
"Progress has costs."
"Costs paid by other people."
"History forgets methods."
"No."
Elena smiled faintly.
"History just started recording yours."
Thomas's eyes flickered toward her necklace.
Too late.
He grabbed it.
Pulled.
Found the microphone.
His face changed.
"Interesting."
He smashed it.
Agents moved early.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Thomas pulled Elena toward him.
A pistol against her ribs.
Mateo fought against the chair.
"Elena!"
Thomas dragged her backstage.
"You always were bait."
"Then why are you running?"
That angered him.
He shoved her.
Elena fell.
Her legs screamed.
Thomas ran toward the rear tunnel.
Mateo broke one wrist free against the chair.
Elena crawled toward a broken metal pole.
Thomas looked back.
She swung.
The pole struck his ankle.
He fell.
Gun skidded away.
Mateo charged from behind, still partly tied to the chair frame.
He tackled Thomas.
Elena grabbed the pistol and slid it away.
Agents flooded the corridor.
Thomas was pinned.
Handcuffed.
For the first time, his face showed defeat.
He looked at Elena on the floor.
"You needed all of them."
Elena smiled.
"Yes."
Thomas frowned.
She continued.
"That's something you never understood."
Mateo reached her.
Elena touched his bruised face.
"Are you okay?"
"I was going to ask you that."
"You're bleeding."
"You're sitting on a theater floor."
"Romantic."
He laughed painfully.
Then kissed her forehead.
Thomas watched.
Elena didn't care.
The arrest should have ended everything.
But evidence recovered from Thomas revealed one final nightmare.
Project Aurora wasn't contained.
Months earlier, Thomas had sold research fragments to three buyers.
One was a pharmaceutical company.
One an overseas military contractor.
And one unknown.
More disturbing, the buyer had received access through Navarro Holdings itself.
Someone inside the company had been helping Thomas.
Rafael looked through the transaction logs.
"Impossible."
Adrian pointed to the authorization.
Executive signature.
A person with full access.
Elena expected another stranger.
Instead, the name belonged to someone she knew.
Rafael Navarro.
Everyone looked at her father.
Rafael stared at the screen.
"I never signed that."
Elena believed him.
For once.
Adrian examined the signature.
"Digital certificate is authentic."
Rafael whispered:
"Then someone cloned my credentials."
Elena looked at the transaction date.
The day after her accident.
Someone had used the chaos to move Aurora research.
Then she noticed the recipient account.
Initials.
C.N.
Celeste Navarro.
Everyone turned toward Celeste.
She looked horrified.
"I didn't do this."
Elena stared.
Her mother's original warning returned.
Celeste.
The name in the letter.
May you like
Maybe they had been wrong to absolve her completely.
Maybe the story still had one more betrayal.
