Chapter 4 - The Art of the Trap

The silence in Boardroom A was suffocating.

Jake stood frozen in the open doorway, his knuckles white against the mahogany frame. Every set of eyes around the massive marble table was pinned on him—not with the usual deference reserved for a rising Silicon Beach tech titan, but with cold, calculated disgust.

Arthur Vance did not wait for Jake to gather his composure. The billionaire venture capitalist tossed a thick stack of audited bank records onto the center of the table. The heavy paper landed with a sharp slap that echoed across the room.

“You’ve got thirty seconds to explain this, Carter,” Vance said, his voice dangerously level. “Because according to Mrs. Carter’s legal counsel, you’ve been using our Series B research funds as collateral for unapproved speculative tech derivatives through an offshore shell company. And you attempted to bind your pregnant wife to the debt obligation without her legal knowledge or consent.”

Jake swallowed hard, his charisma utterly failing him. “Arthur, this is a private family dispute that has been completely blown out of proportion. Emily is... she’s emotionally volatile right now due to her condition. She’s misinterpreting standard corporate risk management structures.”

From the 4K display on the far wall, I let out a soft, amused laugh.

The sound cut through Jake’s defense like a scalpel.

“Emotionally volatile, Jake?” I spoke through the high-definition audio link, my voice silky smooth and unbothered. “Let’s look at the timestamps. On the fourteenth of last month, while I was undergoing a high-risk ultrasound at Cedars-Sinai, you executed a twelve-million-dollar wire transfer from Carter Dynamics’ escrow account into a holding firm in Grand Cayman called Siren Holdings.”

Beside Jake, Sienna Brooks visibly flinched. Her manicured hand instinctively tightened around her leather portfolio.

“And who,” I continued, tilting my head slightly, “is listed as the sole authorized signatory for Siren Holdings? None other than our brilliant Chief Marketing Director, Ms. Sienna Brooks.”

Evelyn Cross, seated at the head of the table, smoothly slid a glossy set of documents across the marble toward the other board members.

“You’ll find the corporate registry documents from the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority in tab three,” Evelyn said, adjusting her designer glasses. “Along with certified IP access logs proving the wire authorizations were initiated from the penthouse suite of the Langham Huntington—billed directly to Mr. Carter’s corporate expense account.”

The boardroom erupted into hushed, venomous murmurs.

Sienna’s face drained of every ounce of color. “That’s—that’s a mischaracterization! Those were promotional allocations for the upcoming European product launch!”

“Without board approval?” Vance interrupted, turning his glare toward her. “Without an independent audit? You two used company treasury funds to underwrite your personal luxury lifestyle and cover illicit market shortfalls.”

“Emily, please,” Jake pleaded, stepping closer to the screen, abandoning his corporate posture entirely. “Think about what you’re doing. You’re destroying the company we built together. You’re destroying our daughter’s future!”

“I didn't destroy this company, Jake. You leveraged it for greed and ego,” I replied, my expression unyielding. “And as the controlling shareholder of Aegis Capital, which holds the decisive twenty-percent swing voting bloc, I have already signed an emergency board resolution.”

Evelyn stood up, smoothing her tailored charcoal blazer.

“Pursuant to Section 4.2 of the Carter Dynamics Corporate Bylaws, the majority coalition hereby passes a motion of no confidence. Effective immediately, Jake Carter is stripped of his executive powers as Chief Executive Officer, and Sienna Brooks is terminated from her position for gross financial misconduct and breach of fiduciary duty.”

Two private security officers, summoned by Grace Bell, entered the boardroom and stood firmly behind Jake and Sienna.

“You have twenty minutes to vacate the executive premises under security escort,” Evelyn concluded cleanly. “Corporate devices must be surrendered at the security desk downstairs. Process servers have already filed the formal civil complaint and forensic audit injunction with the Los Angeles Superior Court.”

Jake stared at the screen, his chest heaving, disbelief giving way to sheer terror. “Emily... you can’t do this to me.”

May you like

“I’m not doing anything to you, Jake,” I said quietly before reaching for the disconnect button on my laptop. “I’m simply letting the consequences of your choices catch up with you. Happy anniversary.”

The screen went black.
