Chapter 9 - The Rebirth of Aegis

Three weeks later, the bell rang at the New York Stock Exchange.

The massive digital billboards across Times Square lit up in radiant blue and silver, broadcasting the new face of Silicon Beach’s most anticipated tech resurgence:

Aegis Innovations: The Future of Autonomous Infrastructure.

Under my leadership as Executive Chairwoman and CTO, we had spent the past month stripping away the toxic speculative ventures Jake had introduced, refocusing the entire platform on its original, robust data-routing core. With Arthur Vance and the board fully backing the new structure, institutional investors returned in droves.

The market response was unprecedented. By mid-afternoon, Aegis Innovations had not only recovered its lost valuation—it surpassed every milestone Jake had ever dreamed of achieving.

I watched the live financial tickers from the newly redesigned corner office on the 42nd floor in Los Angeles. The lavish, gold-trimmed furniture Jake had favored was gone, replaced by clean lines, natural light, and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the Pacific coastline.

Chloe entered the office, carrying a slim leather folder.

“The final divorce decree has been entered into the county records, Ms. Carter,” Chloe said with a warm, respectful smile. “All asset divisions, trust protections, and sole legal and physical custody orders have been signed by the presiding judge. You are officially, completely free.”

“Thank you, Chloe,” I replied, taking the document.

I looked down at the court seal. Every trace of the Carter name was gone. My identity, my company, and my daughter’s future were entirely my own.

That evening, as the golden California sunset painted the sky in shades of amber and rose, I felt the first sharp, unmistakable contraction.

I picked up the phone on my desk and dialed a single number.

“Grace,” I said calmly, leaning back in my chair with a soft smile. “It’s time.”
