Chapter 6 - The Broken Alliance

Forty-eight hours after the boardroom coup, the pressure reached a boiling point.

Jake found refuge in a dingy, extended-stay motel near Burbank—a far cry from the gated opulence of Bel Air. His face was all over the business news feeds, his reputation shredded by daily leaks of the forensic audit. Desperate to rebuild some leverage, he used a prepaid burner phone to contact the one person he thought had as much to lose as he did: Sienna Brooks.

They met at a dimly lit diner off the freeway late in the evening.

Sienna arrived wearing dark sunglasses and a trench coat, nervously scanning the booth before sliding in opposite Jake. Her polished corporate veneer was completely gone, replaced by frantic, hollow eyes.

“Did you bring the copies of the overseas account access keys?” Jake asked, his voice low and raspy as he leaned across the laminate table. “If we can pool the remaining liquidity in the Grand Cayman holding entity, we can retain a federal defense firm before the Department of Justice convenes a grand jury.”

Sienna stared at him with cold disbelief, then let out a sharp, bitter laugh.

“You really don’t get it, do you, Jake?” she whispered harshly. “There is no offshore pool. There is no money left.”

Jake’s heart skipped a beat. “What are you talking about? There was twelve million dollars wired into Siren Holdings!”

“The moment Evelyn Cross served the injunction, the Cayman financial authorities froze the account pending criminal review,” Sienna hissed, leaning forward. “And yesterday afternoon, two special agents from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Task Force knocked on my apartment door.”

The diner around Jake seemed to spin. “Did you talk to them?”

Sienna didn’t answer right away. She reached into her leather bag, pulled out a signed document, and slid it toward him.

It was a proffer agreement from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

“They offered me full immunity, Jake,” Sienna said, her voice devoid of remorse. “In exchange for complete cooperation, all internal text chains, every falsified expense report, and proof that you directed the creation of the Delaware shell company to frame Emily.”

“You traded me?” Jake whispered, his hands trembling as he stared at the legal seal. “After everything I gave you? After everything we planned?”

May you like

“You didn’t give me anything except a one-way ticket to federal prison!” Sienna spat, standing up and pulling her coat tightly around herself. “You were using me to shield yourself, just like you tried to use Emily. The only difference is, she was smart enough to destroy you first. Don’t ever contact me again.”

She turned and walked out into the rain, leaving Jake alone under the flickering fluorescent lights with the crushing realization that there was no way out.
