Chapter 13 - Daniel's Last Request

Daniel contacted Rebecca shortly before his release.
He wanted one thing.
A photograph.
Not of me.
Of the mansion.
Rebecca asked why.
His message said:
I want to see that it's still hers.
I almost refused.
Then I walked outside.
Took a photograph myself.
The mansion stood beneath autumn trees.
The renovated windows reflected blue sky.
The front steps were lined with flowers.
I sent it through Rebecca.
No message.
A week later, Daniel replied:
Thank God.
I never responded.
Months afterward, I learned he moved to another state.
Worked construction administration.
Stayed out of trouble.
I hoped he became better.
Not for me.
For whoever crossed his path next.

Forgiveness wasn't reunion.
Sometimes it was simply losing interest in punishment.
