Chapter 4 - Victoria Came Home

Victoria landed at Dulles under her maiden name.
Federal agents were waiting.
She did not resist.
She asked for an attorney.
Then she asked to speak with me.
I said no.
She asked again.
No.
Then she sent a message through Rebecca.
MARGARET WILL BURY DANIEL BEFORE SHE GOES TO PRISON. I CAN PROVE IT.
That got my attention.
We met in a controlled conference room.
Victoria was nothing like I imagined.
No glamorous criminal mastermind.
No cold seductress.
She looked exhausted.
“What do you want?” I asked.
“Protection.”
“From Margaret?”
“Yes.”
“You've been working with her for years.”
“That's why I'm afraid.”
Victoria explained the beginning.
She married Daniel at twenty-eight.
Margaret controlled their finances almost immediately.
When Daniel's business failed, Margaret proposed a scheme.
Target wealthy partners.
Gain access.
Move money.
Divorce strategically.
Victoria initially refused.
Then participated.
“Why?”
“Money.”
At least she didn't insult me with excuses.
“How many?”
“Before you? Two attempts.”
“Successful?”
“One partially.”
“And me?”
Her eyes lowered.
“You were supposed to be the last.”
“How comforting.”
“Margaret said your estate was enough for everyone to disappear.”
“Where?”
“Portugal.”
“Why pretend you were dead?”
“So Daniel could marry you.”
“Bigamy isn't solved by lying about death.”
“We knew.”
There it was.
No confusion.
No paperwork error.
Fraud from the beginning.
“Did Daniel love me?”
Victoria looked at me strangely.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt more than no.
“He wasn't supposed to.”
I almost laughed.
“You all keep saying that like it makes things better.”
“It doesn't.”
“Why are you helping now?”
“Because Margaret told me to take the blame.”
Victoria produced a phone.
On it were messages.
Margaret: If this collapses, Daniel knew nothing. Claire seduced him while he was vulnerable. Victoria controlled offshore transfers.
Victoria: That's insane.
Margaret: Someone has to carry it.
Victoria had finally realized the family loyalty she helped weaponize against others did not protect her.
It never had.
“What do you have on Margaret?”
“Original records.”
“Where?”
“Portugal.”
“Copies?”
“Yes.”
She handed investigators access credentials.
The files were devastating.
Margaret had directed everything.
Target research.
Introductions.
Loans.
Offshore transfers.
The fake death story.
Even scripts for Daniel.
One document was titled:
CLAIRE PHASES.
Phase One: emotional attachment.
Phase Two: family integration.
Phase Three: normalize financial support.
Phase Four: increase shared liability.
Phase Five: asset consolidation.
Phase Six: exit.
I stared at Phase Six.
“What does exit mean?”
Victoria swallowed.
“Originally? Divorce.”
“Originally?”
She looked toward the detectives.
“After Daniel fell in love with you, Margaret decided divorce was too risky.”
My skin went cold.
“Why?”
“Because he might confess.”
“What was the new exit?”
Victoria didn't answer.
Detective Shaw did.
“We found another document.”
He placed it on the table.
A life insurance policy.
Five million dollars.
Insured:
Claire Ashford.
Beneficiary:
Daniel Whitmore.
I looked at Victoria.
May you like
She whispered:
“Margaret's final plan didn't require you to sign divorce papers.”
