Chapter 5 - The Friday Arrival

Friday morning arrived under a blazing South Florida sun.
At 8:30 AM, Julian kissed my forehead at our kitchen island, briefcase in hand. "I have back-to-back client conferences in Palm Beach today, Eleanor. I might not make it home until late tonight. Don't wait up for me."
"Take all the time you need, Julian," I said, sipping my black coffee with effortless grace. "Make sure everything is settled properly."
"Always," he smiled, stepping out into the morning air.
An hour later, I was seated in the private conference room of Marcus’s legal suite, watching real-time live feeds transmitted from Raymond’s surveillance team outside 4200 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables.
The estate was breathtaking—a modern sanctuary framed by towering palms, manicured hedges, and an imposing wrought-iron gate. At 10:15 AM, two commercial moving trucks pulled into the driveway.
Shortly after, a sleek black sedan arrived. Mia Sinclair stepped out, dressed in designer resort wear and oversized sunglasses. She stood in front of the grand stone entrance, holding up her phone to record a sweeping video of the facade. She was laughing, twirling with her keycard in hand, filming the very property she believed would be her private kingdom.
For the next four hours, Marcus and I watched the pieces fall into place.
Boxes of designer clothing, shoe collections, modern art pieces, and personal items were carried through the front doors. At 1:00 PM, Julian’s Aston Martin briefly appeared on the feed. He walked up the steps, embraced Mia warmly in the open doorway, and handed her a bouquet of white peonies. He stayed for an hour, laughing on the back patio overlooking the pool, before leaving to keep up the appearance of his work schedule.
"They just handed us the entire game on a silver platter," Marcus said, saving the timestamped video files directly into an encrypted server. "This isn't just proof of marital misconduct. This establishes immediate occupancy, proving that the shell company was formed solely to shelter assets for an extramarital party while actively deceiving you."
"What is the total valuation of the assets tied to that house right now?" I asked.
"Between the purchase price, the interior staging, the Range Rover, the jewelry, and the personal furnishings? Seven million, two hundred thousand dollars," Marcus replied. "Under the terms of the Vance Family Trust Bylaws, any direct heir who commits fraud or brings actionable legal scandal against the family holdings faces immediate disqualification as an active beneficiary."
"And Arthur Vance’s reaction?"
Marcus leaned back in his chair, folding his hands. "My uncle Arthur is a traditionalist. He built his empire on reputation and ironclad integrity. He tolerates ruthless ambition, but he despises sloppiness and dishonor. If he finds out Julian used family banking channels and your joint funds to buy an unearned mansion for a mistress, Arthur will disown him before dinner."
"Then Sunday will be an unforgettable afternoon," I said.
At 4:00 PM, I dialed Julian’s mother, Evelyn Vance.
"Evelyn, darling," I said warmly when she answered. "I’m calling about our Sunday afternoon."
"Eleanor, dear!" Evelyn’s aristocratic voice chimed through the line. "Arthur and I are looking forward to brunch. Have you decided on the venue?"
"Actually, Evelyn, I had a much better idea. Arthur mentioned last month that he was looking into historic architecture renovations in Coral Gables. A stunning private estate just hit the market there—a private preview before the public listing. I arranged exclusive access for us at 2:30 PM on Sunday. I thought we could take Arthur for a private walkthrough, and then Julian and I could host an intimate family dinner."

"Oh, Arthur will love that!" Evelyn exclaimed delightedly. "He’s been complaining all week about boring Sunday routines. We'll meet you at the estate at two-thirty sharp."
"Splendid," I smiled into the phone. "Tell Arthur to wear his walking shoes. It’s a magnificent property. One he will never forget."
