Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Saturday was an exercise in absolute psychological warfare.
Julian returned home in the early morning hours, smelling faintly of citrus cologne and expensive bourbon. He was operating on the dizzying high of a man who believed he had successfully orchestrated the perfect double life. He brought me artisanal pastries from a bakery in South Beach, kissed the top of my head, and spent forty minutes talking about his fictitious meetings in Palm Beach.
I poured his Earl Grey tea, smiled at his jokes, and nodded with serene attention. Every smile I gave him was a down payment on the humiliation awaiting him in less than twenty-four hours.
By Saturday afternoon, while Julian was out playing eighteen holes at the Riviera Country Club, Raymond’s legal team finalized the emergency court filings. Marcus had secured a sealed ex parte freeze order signed by a senior family court judge in Miami-Dade County. The order flagged Aegis Horizon LLC, froze Julian’s personal capital accounts, and placed a temporary lis pendens lien over the Coral Gables estate.
The legal trap was primed. All it needed was Arthur Vance’s personal execution.
At 6:00 PM, Julian walked into the bedroom, freshly showered, adjusting his silk tie.
"Mother called me earlier," Julian said, checking his cufflinks in the mirror. "She said you set up a private architectural preview for Dad in Coral Gables tomorrow afternoon instead of the regular club brunch."
"I did," I replied from my vanity, brushing my hair with deliberate strokes. "Your father has been talking about wanting an estate project with classic coral stone masonry and Mediterranean courtyards. This property is pristine. Fully furnished, completely private, and just entered a discreet pre-market window. I thought it would mean a lot to him if we showed it to him together."
Julian paused for a fraction of a second, his reflection meeting mine in the glass. For a heartbeat, a flicker of instinct crossed his eyes—a predator sensing a shift in the air.
"Where in Coral Gables is it?" he asked, trying to sound indifferent.
"Just off Old Cutler Road," I answered smoothly, turning to face him. "Behind a private security enclave. Completely secluded."
Julian’s shoulders visibly relaxed. Old Cutler Road spanned miles of multi-million-dollar enclaves. There were hundreds of gated compounds along that corridor. In his mind, it was impossible that among all the sprawling acreage in South Florida, Eleanor had accidentally booked a tour of the exact five-acre sanctuary he had purchased seventy-two hours prior.

"Dad will appreciate that," Julian said, flashing his trademark smile. "You always think of the family first, Eleanor. It’s what makes you extraordinary."
"I believe in legacy, Julian," I said, holding his gaze until his smile faltered slightly. "And I believe everyone ultimately gets the home they deserve."
