Chapter 7 - The Front Door on Old Cutler Road

Sunday arrived under an immaculate, cloudless blue sky.

At 2:15 PM, Julian drove his silver Aston Martin through the towering wrought-iron gates of the Coral Gables enclave. As we turned onto the private lane, Julian’s posture suddenly went rigid. His hands tightened on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned chalk-white.

He recognized the palm-lined driveway. He recognized the Italian cypress trees.

He recognized the white stone facade of the five-bedroom mansion standing at the end of the private cul-de-sac.

"Eleanor..." Julian’s voice cracked, the color rapidly draining from his face. "What... which property did you say this was?"

"Number 4200," I said warmly, looking out the window as if admiring the landscaping. "Isn't it breathtaking? Look at that craftsmanship. Look at the privacy."

Before Julian could hit the brakes or stammer out an excuse, a black Bentley Mulsanne pulled into the driveway directly behind us.

Arthur and Evelyn Vance had arrived.

Arthur stepped out of the back seat—tall, silver-haired, impeccably tailored, holding his polished mahogany cane. Evelyn followed, wearing a cream designer coat and an expression of eager anticipation.

Julian sat frozen in the driver's seat, his chest heaving with shallow, panicked breaths. Cold sweat beaded along his hairline.

"Julian?" I asked gently, touching his arm. "Aren't you going to get out and greet your parents?"

Julian looked at me, and in that single, terrible second, he finally understood. The veil fell away. He saw the ice in my eyes, the absolute composure in my posture, and realized that he hadn't been clever; he had been escorted directly to his own execution.

"You knew," he whispered, his voice trembling with horror. "You knew the entire time."

"Get out of the car, Julian," I commanded quietly. "Don't keep your father waiting."

Arthur approached the steps, admiring the grand stone archway. "Magnificent estate, Eleanor! The symmetry is outstanding. Julian, my boy, who holds the private preview access for this property?"

Julian stood on the gravel driveway, looking like a ghost trapped in an expensive suit. He couldn't speak. His throat worked silently.

"Julian has the keys, Arthur," I said with a gracious smile, stepping up to the porch beside Evelyn. "In fact, Julian has had full access all weekend. Go ahead, darling. Open the front door for your family."

Julian’s hands were shaking so violently that he could barely produce the brass keycard from his pocket. He stared at the electronic lock as if it were a live grenade.

"Julian, what is the matter with you?" Arthur barked, tapping his cane with impatience. "Open the damned door."

With a trembling hand, Julian held the card against the scanner.

The lock chimed softly.

The heavy mahogany double doors swung inward.

Standing in the center of the grand marble foyer, wearing a silk robe and holding a glass of iced tea, was Mia Sinclair.

The silence that fell over the entrance was absolute, suffocating, and total.

Mia froze, her glass slipping from her fingers and shattering violently across the imported Italian marble, splashing amber liquid against her bare feet. She looked from Julian’s horrified face to Arthur’s thunderous expression, and finally to mine.

"Julian?" Mia whispered, terror seizing her features. "What... what is happening?"

May you like

Arthur Vance did not shout. He stepped past Julian into the foyer, looked at the scattered moving boxes monogrammed M.S., looked at the portrait of Julian and Mia already resting on the mantelpiece, and then turned back toward his only son.

"Julian," Arthur’s voice dropped into a register of icy, devastating fury that shook the foundations of the room. "Explain to me why there is a woman living in a five-million-dollar property funded by my family's treasury."
