Chapter 14 - The Visit

Four years after the attack, Oliver was seven.
He knew Grandma Evelyn had “made dangerous choices and had to go away.”
Nothing more.
Then she became eligible for supervised family contact.
We consulted his therapist.
Asked Oliver.
He wanted to see her.
So we allowed one visit.
Supervised.
Public facility.
Evelyn looked older.
Oliver looked at her for several seconds.
Then:
“Grandma?”
She cried.
He hugged her.
I almost stopped him.
Maya touched my arm.
His choice.
Within safe limits.
Evelyn did not ask about money.
Didn't criticize us.
Didn't demand another visit.
Before leaving, she looked at Maya.
“I'm sorry.”
Maya nodded.
Not forgiveness.
May you like
Acknowledgment.
That was enough for one day.
