Chapter 6 - The Slap I Regretted

I had slapped my mother in the nursery.
People online later celebrated that part after details became public.
I didn't.
I understood why I did it.
My son couldn't breathe.
My wife was bleeding.
My mother refused to return medication.
But I did not turn violence into heroism.
I told investigators exactly what happened.
I accepted responsibility.
No charges were ultimately pursued against me under the circumstances, but that didn't make the action admirable.
Maya understood.
Still, she said:
“Don't let what she did turn you into someone who believes hitting is justice.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Evelyn's entire worldview depended on control.
I didn't want to defeat it by becoming another version.
So I stopped fantasizing about revenge.
I focused on evidence.
Protection.
Family.
That choice became important when Evelyn's attorney offered a deal.
She would plead to reduced charges if I supported leniency.
In exchange, she would reveal where Grandpa's missing money went.
I refused to bargain privately.
“Tell prosecutors.”
She did.

The money led somewhere unexpected.
My sister.
