Chapter 3 - My Grandfather Knew

Henry Shaw brought the letter personally.

Grandpa's handwriting shook slightly.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, Evelyn has probably discovered Oliver's trust.

I stopped.

He knew.

I continued.

Your mother has spent most of her adult life confusing control with care. I failed to confront that when you were young.

I looked at Maya.

Grandpa continued.

I am not skipping you because I distrust you.

I am skipping you because I fear you have spent your life giving Evelyn access whenever she demands it.

That hurt.

Because it was true.

Grandpa had watched me hand my mother spare keys.

Passwords.

Financial information.

Family schedules.

He saw what I called closeness.

He recognized control.

The letter continued.

Oliver's trust is protected by independent trustees. Do not attempt to break those protections for convenience. Money should give the boy choices, not create another person who believes they own him.

I lowered the letter.

Maya whispered:

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

Grandpa had also instructed Henry to disclose the trust directly to Maya and me once probate reached the required stage.

That meeting was scheduled for next month.

Evelyn discovered it early.

How?

Raymond Pike.

Her attorney.

He had once worked with Grandpa's estate firm.

Somebody leaked information.

Now investigators had another direction.

Then Henry told us something else.

Grandpa had amended his plan six months before death.

Originally, Evelyn was to receive $8 million.

He reduced it to $100,000.

Why?

He discovered she had been taking money from him.

Not millions.

Approximately $640,000 over several years.

Unauthorized transfers.

Grandpa confronted her.

She called it repayment for caregiving.

He called it theft.

He changed the estate.

She never knew until after his death.

Then she discovered Oliver received thirty-two million.

That was when the nursery camera appeared.

Timeline.

Motive.

Plan.

My mother had spent months preparing to portray Maya as unfit.

But what about me?

Ortiz found that answer too.

Evelyn had drafted another affidavit.

It described me as absent.

Work-obsessed.

Emotionally dependent on my mother.

A father incapable of handling Oliver's medical needs alone.

She planned to discredit both parents.

Then step forward as the stable grandmother.

The savior.

May you like

The only responsible adult.

The same role she had played my entire life.
