Chapter 10 - The Trial

The criminal case focused on the clearest offenses.
Child endangerment.
Evidence fabrication.
Assault.
Fraud-related conduct.
Forgery.
Conspiracy.
Evelyn's attorneys argued she was an overprotective grandmother.
The hidden camera destroyed that defense.
The jury watched Evelyn remove Oliver's inhaler.
They watched her smash the lamp.
They watched her shove Maya.
They heard Oliver wheezing.
Then they heard Evelyn say:
“Once Ryan sees you like this, he'll give me the child himself.”
Maya left the courtroom during that part.
She couldn't hear it again.
Ryan stayed.
He forced himself to watch.
Not because he needed more proof.
Because he never again wanted to minimize what happened.
Martin testified.
Rebecca testified.
Rosa testified.
The forensic accountant testified.
Then Ryan took the stand.
The prosecutor asked:
“Why did you initially believe your mother's accusations against your wife might be credible?”
Ryan swallowed.
“Because I had spent my entire life being trained to believe my mother before anyone else.”
“Did you ultimately believe her?”
“No.”
“What changed?”
“My son couldn't breathe.”
The courtroom went silent.
“And my wife was bleeding.”
He looked toward Maya.
“I finally understood that keeping peace with my mother meant making my wife and child pay for it.”
Evelyn stared at him.
Ryan continued.
“I chose them.”
That was the moment Evelyn broke.
“You ungrateful child!”
The judge ordered her quiet.
She kept shouting.
“I gave you everything!”
Ryan looked at her.
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“You gave me things and called them ownership.”
Evelyn was removed temporarily from the courtroom.
The jury saw exactly who she was.
They convicted her on the central charges.
Sentencing would come later.
Outside court, reporters asked Ryan whether he hated his mother.
“No.”
“Do you forgive her?”
“No.”
“Then how do you feel?”
May you like
Ryan looked toward Maya holding Oliver.
“Finished.”
