Chapter 3 - The Eighteen-Million-Dollar Grandson

Ryan hired an independent attorney the next morning.
Not the Whitmore family attorney.
Not anyone Evelyn knew.
Samantha Reed specialized in trusts and family litigation.
She reviewed the documents.
Then gave them worse news.
“Your mother has already petitioned the trust.”
Ryan stared.
“For what?”
“Emergency authority.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
Maya's face went pale.
“Before the attack.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn claimed Oliver's parents were experiencing marital instability.
She claimed Maya had psychiatric problems.
She claimed Ryan's demanding career left him unable to supervise Oliver.
She presented herself as the stable family alternative.
The petition had not yet been granted.
But it proved the nursery attack wasn't the beginning.
It was supposed to be the final evidence.
“Why didn't anyone contact us?”
Ryan asked.
“Preliminary filings can happen before a hearing.”
Samantha looked at him.
“Your mother expected to have supporting evidence before you ever learned about it.”
The destroyed nursery.
The fake psychiatric evaluation.
The hidden inhaler.
The forged custody petition.
Everything had been staged to make the trust filing look credible.
Ryan felt physically ill.
Then Samantha found another detail.
“If Evelyn obtained custody and became court-recognized guardian, she could request distributions for housing, education, medical care, security, travel—”
“How much?”
“Potentially substantial amounts.”
Maya whispered:
“She was going to use our son as an account.”
Ryan stood.
He walked to the window.
For the first time, he remembered childhood differently.
His mother controlling his bank account in college.
Choosing his first apartment.
Discouraging girlfriends.
Selecting his business partners.
Calling his father irresponsible after his death.
Maybe Evelyn's control had never been only emotional.
Maybe money had always been underneath it.
Samantha asked:
“Who administers your own trust?”
“My mother used to.”
“Used to?”
“I assumed she still advised it.”
“Let's verify.”
They did.
Ryan discovered several million dollars had moved through entities he didn't recognize over the previous decade.
His mother's fingerprints were everywhere.
May you like
Oliver wasn't Evelyn's first financial target.
Ryan had been.
