Chapter 8 - Evelyn Lost the Money First
Samantha moved quickly.
Using Charles's documents, current financial evidence, and the criminal investigation, she petitioned the court to remove Evelyn from every remaining position of influence over Whitmore trusts.
The hearing lasted six hours.
Evelyn attended with attorneys.
She looked directly at Ryan.
“You're letting Maya destroy your father's legacy.”
Ryan placed Charles's journal on the table.
“No.”
For the first time, he smiled at his mother without fear.
“I'm restoring it.”
The court suspended Evelyn's authority.
Then removed her.
Independent fiduciaries took control.
Rebecca lost access to family-funded benefits tied to Evelyn's discretionary accounts.
Martin Keene was removed.
Oliver's trust became untouchable by family members without independent approval.
The money Evelyn had spent decades controlling disappeared from her reach in one afternoon.
She looked smaller leaving court.
But losing money made her dangerous.
Two nights later, Maya woke to glass breaking downstairs.
Ryan called 911.
They locked themselves with Oliver inside the bedroom.
Police arrived.
A rear window had been smashed.
Nobody was found.
But on the kitchen counter sat a photograph.
Charles.
Ryan.
Rebecca.
Taken when Ryan was seven.
Across Maya's face—someone had placed one of her photographs over Charles's—was written:
YOU DESTROY FAMILIES TOO.
Evelyn denied involvement.
Police couldn't immediately prove otherwise.
Then the home-security company found something.
Someone had attempted to disable the alarm using an old master code.
Only four people had ever known it.
