"ONE PLATE OF DINNER AND THE CRUEL TRUTH"-Full Story

The rich, savory aroma of roasted chicken filled the air of the luxurious Whitmore estate. The soft clinking of silver forks against fine porcelain plates mingled with the cheerful laughter of three children. They were playfully passing around bowls of mashed potatoes and thick, warm gravy. Lorena walked back and forth in a white apron embroidered with flowers, a gentle, loving smile gracing her lips as she watched her children eat.

But at the furthest, darkest corner of the long dining table, the atmosphere was completely different.

Six-year-old Chloe Whitmore sat curled up in a large wooden chair. In front of her lay a completely empty plate—so clean it was heartbreaking. Her small hands were folded neatly in her lap, her large, tear-filled eyes staring intently at her siblings' food. She hadn't eaten since noon, and her little stomach was twisting with painful hunger pangs.

Mustering all her courage, Chloe stood up. She tiptoed along the marble kitchen island and crept up next to Lorena. Gripping the edge of the stone counter with trembling hands, she looked up with a tear-stained, pleading face and asked in a voice barely louder than a whisper:

"Mrs. Lorena… is there food for me too?"

The smile on Lorena’s face vanished instantly. The warmth she had shown just a second ago was ripped away like a mask, revealing a cold, disdainful expression. She lowered her gaze to the little girl, placed a hand on her hip, and slammed the gravy ladle onto the counter.

"Don’t call me just to ask for food," Lorena hissed.

The laughter at the dining table died out immediately. The three children stopped eating and stared at Chloe with blank, unfeeling eyes—a perfect reflection of their mother.

Chloe lowered her head, hot tears of humiliation finally spilling over her cheeks. She only wanted a few leftovers, or even a piece of dry bread.

Lorena took a step closer, leaning down to loom over the little girl. "I cook for my children," she said, her voice sharp and cruel. "Not for strangers. If you’re hungry, wait until your father gets home. You are not my responsibility."

Every word felt like a knife cutting into the six-year-old’s heart. "Stranger." "Not my responsibility." These were the words a stepmother used to torture her husband's child in the girl’s own home. Chloe could only sob, her tiny shoulders shaking violently.
