Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Glass Tower

By noon, the internet had exploded.
The video recorded by patrons at L’Auberge Dorée had gone viral across every major social media platform. Millions of views, hundreds of thousands of shares. Headlines blared across online news outlets: “Billionaire Julian Sterling Reveals Secret Marriage to Defend Auditor in Luxury Restaurant Scene.”
While public opinion had initially leaned toward sympathy for Elena, a counter-campaign began to surface by early afternoon. Anonymous accounts began posting leaked, heavily edited photographs of Elena meeting Mark in private hotel lounges and dimly lit cafes over the past six months.
The narrative was being actively rewritten by Victoria’s PR machine: “Was the auditor playing both sides? Did Elena Sterling use her influence to ruin Vance Enterprises for personal gain?”
Elena sat in her private office on the forty-second floor, monitoring the media feed. Her phone was ringing incessantly—journalists, board members, former colleagues from her old firm seeking comments.
A sharp knock at her door broke her concentration. Her assistant, Clara, stepped in with a look of extreme anxiety.
"Mrs. Sterling... there's a group of shareholders downstairs in the lobby," Clara reported softly. "They're demanding an emergency meeting with the board. They claim the media circus is tanking Sterling Global's stock value."
"How much has it dropped?" Elena asked, keeping her tone measured.
"Three point two percent since the market opened," Clara admitted. "And... Victoria Vance is downstairs. She’s brought a news crew."
Elena’s eyes narrowed. Victoria was playing her final card: public pressure. If she could make Elena look like a liability to Sterling Global's board of directors, she could force Julian’s hand into a settlement to quiet the noise.
"Tell security to let the news crew stay in the lobby," Elena commanded, standing up and smoothing her blazer. "And call Julian. Tell him not to come down yet."
"Mrs. Sterling, are you sure?" Clara asked, startled. "Victoria is looking for a scene."
"She wants a scene," Elena replied, stepping out into the hallway. "I'm going to give her a trial."
Five minutes later, Elena stepped out of the private executive elevator into the grand marble lobby. Microphones were instantly thrust toward her as flashbulbs blinded the air. Victoria stood at the center of the crowd, dressed in a striking red suit, flanked by two high-profile crisis management lawyers.
"There she is!" Victoria called out, her voice amplified by the acoustics of the lobby. "The woman who uses corporate espionage to destroy legitimate family businesses!"
The reporters surged forward, shouting questions over one another. "Elena, did you have an affair with Mark Vance?" "Is Sterling Global using you to perform illegal takeovers?" "How do you respond to the leaked photos?"
Elena walked calmly to the center of the lobby, stopping just three feet away from Victoria. She didn't have a security detail surrounding her. She stood alone, composed, looking directly into the camera lenses.
"Victoria," Elena began, her voice calm and remarkably clear. "You brought cameras here today to talk about honor, marriage, and integrity. So let’s talk about all three."
Elena pulled a small USB drive from her pocket and held it up for the cameras to see.
"The photos leaked to the press today show me meeting Mark Vance at the Grand Regent Hotel on three occasions," Elena announced loudly. "What those photos don't show is that Mark Vance was acting as a whistleblower."
Victoria’s confident posture suddenly froze. She blinked rapidly, her face turning pale under the bright camera lights. "What... what are you talking about?"
"Mark Vance realized three months ago that you and your father were planning to liquidate Vance Enterprises' assets and frame him for the tax evasion," Elena explained to the room, turning her body so the news cameras had a clear view. "He came to me, as an independent auditor for Sterling Global, to seek immunity in exchange for turning over your internal double-entry ledgers."
A collective murmur erupted among the reporters.
"That night in the restaurant," Elena continued, stepping closer to Victoria, "you didn't slap me because you thought I was sleeping with your husband. You slapped me because Mark had just sent me the final encryption key to your offshore accounts thirty minutes prior. You tried to make it look like a crime of passion to discredit the evidence."
"You're lying!" Victoria shrieked, her composed facade completely shattering. "Mark would never betray me!"
"He already did," a voice echoed from the back of the lobby.
The crowd parted. Mark Vance stepped through the glass doors, accompanied by two federal agents in dark suits. He avoided Victoria’s eyes entirely, looking straight down at the marble floor.
"Victoria Vance," one of the federal agents stepped forward, pulling a document from his coat. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the handcuffs clicked around Victoria’s wrists in front of live television cameras, the entire lobby fell into awe-struck silence. Victoria turned back to look at Elena, her eyes filled with raw hatred and disbelief.
Elena simply watched her quietly, standing tall under the bright lights, protected not by shouting—but by the truth she had meticulously built.
