Chapter 5 - Secrets of the Old Family

The night grew darker as Julian’s private car navigated the winding roads leading toward the industrial district on the city’s outskirts. Rain lashed against the armored windows, reflecting the neon signs of abandoned warehouses and shipping yards.

Elena sat silently in the backseat, her hands clenched tightly in her lap. Memories she had spent a decade burying were rushing back to the surface.

Fifteen years ago, her father, Dr. Richard Vance—brother to Arthur Vance—had designed a revolutionary clean-energy filtration patent. It was a technology capable of transforming industrial waste into reusable energy, worth billions. But before Richard could bring it to market, he died suddenly in a tragic, unexplained lab fire. Within months, Arthur Vance had seized the company, rebranded it as Vance Enterprises, and pushed Elena into orphanages, claiming Richard’s debts had bankrupted the family.

"Arthur didn't just steal the company, did he?" Elena whispered, looking out the rain-slicked window. "He took my father's life's work and buried it so he could profit off legacy fossil fuels."

Julian took her hand, squeezing it firmly. "We knew he held onto the physical blueprints, Elena. What we didn't know was that he hid them inside the old family estate—the very property he put up as collateral for his bail tonight."

The car pulled up outside a gated gothic mansion, its stone facade dark and looming against the stormy sky. A single light burned on the second floor.

"Arthur is desperate," Julian warned as his chief security officer opened the car doors. "He knows the federal charges against Victoria will drag him down too. He’s trying to sell your father’s original patents to an overseas buyer before his assets are frozen by the court."

"Not on my watch," Elena said, her eyes flashing with determination.

They entered the mansion through the grand oak doors, flanked by two of Julian’s trusted security team. The house smelled of old dust, expensive scotch, and decay.

At the end of the grand hallway, inside the wood-paneled library, Arthur Vance stood before an open floor safe, shoving armfuls of old leather-bound journals and blueprints into a heavy silver briefcase.

"Leaving so soon, Uncle Arthur?" Elena’s voice rang out through the silent library.

Arthur spun around, a heavy silver revolver slipping from his hand and clattering onto the Persian rug. He gasped, his face gaunt and disheveled, a stark contrast to the arrogant billionaire who had stood in Sterling Global’s boardroom earlier that morning.

"Elena..." Arthur stammered, stepping back against the safe. "How did you... how did you find this place?"

"You forgot that I audited your personal real estate portfolio three months ago," Elena said, stepping slowly into the room alongside Julian. "You listed this estate under a shell corporation, but you used my father’s original trust fund account to pay the property taxes. You left a trail of breadcrumbs paved with stolen money."

Arthur let out a bitter, raspy laugh, realization dawning on him. "All of it... from the very beginning... you didn't just happen to join my firm. You hunted us."

"I took back what you stole," Elena replied coldly, pointing toward the leather journals in his briefcase. "Those blueprints belong to my father's estate. To me."

"Your father was a fool!" Arthur shouted, his voice echoing frantically. "He wanted to give the patents away to the public! He wanted to ruin our family’s wealth for his high-minded ideals! I did what was necessary to survive!"

"You murdered him, didn't you?" Elena asked, her voice trembling slightly with fifteen years of suppressed grief. "The lab fire... it wasn't an accident."

Arthur froze, his mouth half-open. The silence in the library was deafening.

Julian took a subtle step forward, positioning himself slightly in front of Elena, his hand inside his coat pocket. "The DA already has the arson report from fifteen years ago, Arthur. A digital copy of the original physical file was backed up in the safe you just unlocked."

Arthur looked down at the open safe, then back at Elena and Julian. He realized that every move he had made over the last decade had been anticipated, tracked, and documented.

"It’s over, Arthur," Julian said softly. "Put the briefcase down."

Tears of rage and defeat streamed down Arthur’s weathered face. Slowly, trembling, he unclasped his fingers, letting the silver briefcase drop heavily onto the floor.

Outside, the faint blue and red lights of approaching police cruisers reflected through the tall stained-glass windows, illuminating the dark library with the sudden light of justice.
