Chapter 9 - The Trial of Truth
Spring had arrived in the city. The cherry blossoms along the grand avenue outside Sterling Global were in full bloom, painting the granite sidewalks in shades of soft pink and white.
In the main auditorium of the City Science and Technology Center, hundreds of journalists, international investors, and young scientists gathered for the annual Clean Energy Summit.
At the center of the stage stood a massive digital screen displaying the working prototype of the Vance-Sterling Filtration Unit—the exact technology Dr. Richard Vance had dreamed of creating fifteen years ago.
The master of ceremonies stepped to the podium. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the President of the Vance-Sterling Innovation Fund—Elena Sterling."
The auditorium broke into deafening applause as Elena stepped up to the podium. She looked stunning, wearing a simple navy blue gown that mirrored the color of the suit Julian had placed over her shoulders on that dark night three months ago.
In the front row sat Julian, his eyes locked on her with unyielding love and admiration. Beside him sat Lady Genevieve, who had officially retired from public life but had made a special appearance today to support her granddaughter.
Elena adjusted the microphone, looking out over the smiling faces of the audience.
"Fifteen years ago," Elena began, her voice carrying warmth and emotional depth throughout the hall, "a brilliant scientist told his young daughter that true progress isn't measured by how much wealth an individual accumulates, but by how many lives their work touches."
She paused, looking down at Julian, sharing a silent moment of deep gratitude.
"There was a time, not long ago, when I found myself standing in a room full of staring strangers," Elena continued, her voice soft yet powerful. "A moment where it felt like the entire world had judged me incorrectly, where toxicity and cruelty seemed to win. But respect isn't proven by shouting in the dark. Respect is revealed when someone chooses to stand by your side when everyone else has turned against you."
The crowd listened in rapt silence, deeply moved by the quiet strength of her words.
