Chapter 11 - Cornered Beasts

Diane’s glass of Scotch slipped from her fingers, smashing onto the imported Italian marble floor. Dark amber liquid and ice cubes splashed across her slippers.

"You're lying!" she screamed, her voice cracking into an ugly, shrill shriek. "Eleanor loved ME! She would never leave this house to an ungrateful, pathetic leech like you!"

"The court already verified the signature, Mrs. Carter," Marcus interjected coldly. "If you are not off these premises by 5:00 PM on Thursday, the Chatham County Sheriff will physically remove you and throw your personal belongings onto the curb."

Diane staggered back against the foyer table, her chest heaving violently. For the first time in her life, she looked at me not with haughty superiority, but with pure, unadulterated terror.

She realized the truth: the lifestyle she had used to lord over everyone, the house she bragged about to her social club, the wealth she used as a leash to control her children—it was all gone.

"You can't do this to your mother, Claire..." Diane whimpered, her harsh tone suddenly dissolving into fake, desperate sobbing. She reached out with trembling hands to touch my arm. "We're family! I gave birth to you! I took care of you when David left!"

I stepped back, out of her reach, staring at her with complete detachment.

"You didn't take care of me, Diane," I said softly. "You watched my daughter drag her broken leg across brick streets for three hours and called it 'theater.' You tried to put me in an asylum so you could take my child away. You are not my mother."

I turned on my heel and walked out the grand front doors, leaving her wailing in the empty foyer.

By Wednesday morning, the fallout reached its boiling point.

Mark, out on bail after posting bond using his last remaining savings, was facing criminal charges for witness intimidation and felony property destruction. With no job and no income, his wife filed for divorce and took their younger children, leaving Mark alone in a rented apartment.

Mason’s criminal trial for aggravated assault was set for the following month. With Marcus Vance presenting the Savannah courthouse surveillance video and the sworn testimonies of two independent witnesses—including Arthur Montgomery—a conviction and juvenile detention sentence were virtually guaranteed.

My parents' world had completely collapsed.

On Wednesday night, forty-eight hours after receiving her eviction notice, I was sitting at the dining table in our temporary apartment, going over permanent school enrollment options for Lily. Her cast was coming off in two weeks, and her physical therapy was progressing wonderfully.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated on the table. It was an urgent call from Officer Miller at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department.

"Claire," Officer Miller said, his tone grim and urgent. "Where are you right now?"

"I'm at home with my daughter," I replied, a sudden wave of ice running through my veins. "Why? What happened?"

"Diane Carter just checked out of a local motel," Officer Miller said. "And ten minutes ago, we received a call from a neighbor who saw Mark’s truck speeding toward 412 Magnolia Lane. A neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from the back windows of the mansion."

My breath hitched in my throat. "Smoke?!"

"They're setting fire to the property, Claire," Officer Miller warned. "If they can't have the estate, they're trying to burn it to the ground so you can't have it either. Fire crews are en route, but do NOT go near that house. Mark and Diane are inside, and we believe Mark is armed."

May you like

I stood up, my heart hammering against my ribs.

They had lost everything—their money, their status, their control. And now, like cornered beasts, they were ready to burn down their own legacy out of pure, unhinged malice.
