Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

Two days after I kicked Robert and David out of the hospital, the war moved from the shadows to the public square.
My mother, Diane, knew she couldn't win through the bank or the legal system without money. So, she did what she did best: she weaponized public opinion.
It started on Facebook.
I was sitting in the hospital cafeteria getting a cold cup of coffee when my phone exploded with notifications. Messages from high school acquaintances, old neighbors, and distant cousins began flooding my inbox.
"Claire, is this true?"
"How could you do this to your own family?"
"I always thought you were sweet, but this is cold-hearted."
I pulled up Facebook and my stomach dropped.
Diane had posted a lengthy, heart-wrenching status update along with a photo of 17-year-old Mason sitting in a holding cell, looking small and miserable.
"PRAYER REQUEST FOR OUR FAMILY," her post began.
"Yesterday, my grandson Mason was taken away in handcuffs because of a tragic teenage accident. My daughter, Claire, has suffered a severe mental breakdown following her divorce and is now seeking revenge against her own blood. She fabricated charges, lied to the police, and is holding her daughter Lily hostage in a hospital room, refusing to let her loving grandparents see her. Please pray for Claire's heart to soften before she completely ruins a young boy's life over a minor stumble..."
The post already had over 600 shares and thousands of comments.
People were tearing me apart in the comment section. Calling me a bitter ex-wife, an abusive mother, a monster who belonged in an institution.
My phone rang. It was the principal of Lily’s high school.
"Claire," Principal Owens said, his tone icy and professional. "We’ve received several calls from concerned family members regarding Lily’s safety and your current emotional state. We are obligated to report these allegations to Child Protective Services for a mandatory welfare check."
My blood ran cold. "Principal Owens, my mother is lying! Mason threw Lily down a flight of stone stairs! Her leg is fractured in two places!"
"Be that as it may, Claire, when multiple family members file reports claiming a parent is unfit and mentally unstable, we have to follow protocol. A CPS caseworker will be visiting you at the hospital today."
I hung up, my hands shaking so badly I dropped my coffee cup. It smashed onto the tile floor, dark liquid spilling across my shoes.
They weren't just trying to protect Mason anymore. They were trying to paint me as insane so CPS would remove Lily from my care and place her directly with... Diane and Robert.
If CPS took Lily, my parents would drop all charges against Mason on her behalf.
I rushed back up to Lily’s room, my heart hammering against my ribs.

When I opened the door, a woman in a sharp gray suit was already standing by Lily’s bed, taking notes on a clipboard. Beside her stood my mother, wearing a pastel cardigan and dabbing fake tears from her eyes with a tissue.
"Oh, Claire," Diane sobbed softly as soon as she saw me. "Thank goodness you're here. We were just telling Ms. Vance from Child Protective Services how worried we are about your sudden violent outbursts..."
