Chapter 6 - Shadow in the Dark

The red paint on my car window looked like fresh blood in the dim, fluorescent lighting of the hospital parking garage.

I stood there for a long moment, staring at the slashed tires and the crude message: WITHDRAW THE CHARGES.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but I forced myself to take a deep, steadying breath. Five years ago, I would have broken down in tears right there on the cold concrete floor. Today, my anger was a cold, sharp weapon.

They thought vandalizing my car would intimidate me into silence. They didn't realize it only gave me more ammunition.

Instead of panicking, I pulled out my phone, took crisp, high-resolution photographs of every angle of the damage, and immediately called the hospital security desk and the local police department.

Twenty minutes later, two patrol officers were reviewing the parking garage security footage with the hospital’s head of security.

"Look right here," Officer Miller said, pointing to the monitor screen.

The security camera showed a tall male figure in a dark hoodie walking up to my sedan at 2:15 AM. He took a knife to all four tires, sprayed the red paint across the driver’s side glass, and then—in a moment of incredible stupidity—pulled down his hood to wipe his forehead under the garage light.

It was Mark. My brother.

"That's Mark Carter," I told the officer, my voice cold and unwavering. "He's the father of Mason Carter, the teenager currently facing felony assault charges for throwing my daughter down the courthouse stairs."

Officer Miller sighed, shaking his head. "Tampering with a witness, felony vandalism, and intimidation. Your brother just bought himself a ticket to the same jail cell as his son, Mrs. Carter."

"Please arrest him before he comes back," I said softly.

"We're on our way to his house right now."

I walked back up to Lily’s room, keeping my demeanor completely calm so she wouldn't pick up on my stress. She was sitting up in bed, working on a sketchpad I had bought her from the hospital gift shop.

"Everything okay down there, Mom?" she asked, glancing up with her bright green eyes.

"Just a little bump in the road, sweetie," I smiled, sitting beside her and gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Nothing your mom can't handle."

Around 4:00 AM, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unsaved number. I answered it silently, stepping out into the hallway.

"Claire..." my mother's voice hissed into the speaker. She sounded panicked, breathless, and completely unraveled. "What did you do? What did you DO?!"

"I didn't do anything, Diane," I replied calmly. "Mark chose to come onto hospital property and commit a felony on camera."

"They dragged him out of our house in his pajamas!" Diane sobbed hysterically. "The neighbors saw everything! The police wouldn't even let him put his shoes on! He's an executive at a regional firm, Claire! His career will be ruined!"

"He should have thought about his career before he helped his son assault my daughter, and long before he slashed my tires," I said, my voice hardening into ice.

"You're a monster!" she shrieked. "We raised you! We gave you everything! And you're destroying our family over a broken leg!"

"You didn't raise me, Diane," I replied evenly. "You controlled me. And the moment I refused to let you ruin Lily's life the way you ruined mine, you showed your true colors. Don't ever call this number again."

I hung up and blocked the number.

I thought that with Mark in jail alongside Mason, my parents would finally retreat and seek a legal defense. But I had severely underestimated how desperate and dangerous cornered narcissists could be.

Because two days later, on the morning Lily was scheduled to be discharged from the hospital, a stranger in a tailored suit walked into her room holding an official legal summons.
