Chapter 6 - The Recording

The recording destroyed Adrian's remaining certainty.
Grace's voice was unmistakable.
“You said Adrian would only be delayed.”
Marcus answered.
“That was the plan.”
“He could have died.”
“He didn't.”
“What about Richard's files?”
“Adrian doesn't have them.”
Then Grace said something worse.
“Evan can never know what we've done.”
Adrian stopped the recording.
Hannah sat beside him.
Naomi remained across the table.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Adrian asked, “Was my mother involved in sabotaging the car?”
“We don't know,” Naomi said. “The recording begins mid-conversation.”
Adrian called Grace.
She refused to answer.
He returned to the mansion.
Her bedroom was empty.
Closet cleared.
Passport gone.
On the bed was a letter.
Adrian, I made terrible choices, but I never wanted you hurt. Marcus told me he would delay you because Peter was confused and dangerous. I believed him. By the time I understood what happened, Marcus had evidence that could send Evan to prison. I stayed silent to protect both of you. Forgive me if you can.
Adrian crushed the paper.
Again.
Protection.
Everyone kept betraying him in the name of protection.
Naomi traced Grace to a hotel near JFK.
Before they could reach her, she disappeared.
Security footage showed Grace entering a black SUV voluntarily.
The driver was Marcus Vale.
Adrian immediately called him.
Marcus answered.
“Where is my mother?”
“Safe.”
“If you hurt her—”
“You still think this is about hurting people.”
“You sabotaged my car.”
“No.”
“You hid my medical reports.”
“Yes.”
Adrian froze.
Marcus continued calmly.
“I did that because a disabled Adrian Cole was easier to control than a dead Adrian Cole.”
Hannah's face went pale.
“Who wanted him dead?” she whispered.
Marcus heard her.
“Ask his brother.”
Then the call ended.
Adrian didn't believe it.
Until Naomi found Samuel Crane.
He was living in Montreal.
And he was willing to talk.
Crane confessed that Evan had approached him two years earlier.
Evan wanted Adrian's car disabled.
But according to Crane, Evan's instruction had been specific.
Make the car fail to start.
Nothing more.
Crane paid a mechanic.
The mechanic was later found dead from an apparent overdose.
Someone had changed the plan.
Marcus.
Why?
The answer emerged through Richard Cole's hidden files.
Marcus had been stealing from Cole Enterprises for more than a decade.
Medical facilities.
Construction contracts.
Insurance claims.
Hudson Crown was only the largest scheme.
Richard discovered it.
Peter Lang helped him.
Grace learned pieces of it.
Evan learned other pieces.
Everyone held part of the truth.
Nobody had all of it.
Marcus had survived by turning them against each other.
Evan wanted Adrian delayed so he could force Hudson Crown through the board.
Marcus turned sabotage into attempted murder.
Then, when Adrian survived, Marcus realized permanent disability offered an even better solution.
Keep Adrian alive.
Keep him isolated.
Keep him hopeless.
And keep him away from the company.
Hannah looked sick.
“He stole two years from you.”
Adrian stared at his legs.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“He tried.”
That distinction changed something.
Adrian returned to rehabilitation the next morning.
He worked harder.
Weeks passed.
Two steps became five.
Five became twelve.
Twelve became a slow journey across the therapy room with braces and a walker.
Meanwhile, Naomi built the case.
But they still needed Marcus.
And Grace.
Then Evan arrived at the mansion.
He looked terrible.
Unshaven.
Exhausted.
Adrian refused to let him inside.
Evan stood in the rain.
“I know where Mom is.”
Adrian opened the door.
“Where?”
“Marcus has her.”
“You said she went voluntarily.”
“She did. At first.”
Evan swallowed.
“He threatened to expose what I did unless she came with him.”
“What you did?”
Evan looked at his brother.
“I told Crane to disable your car.”
Adrian's expression became stone.
Evan began crying.
“I wanted the board meeting delayed. That's all. I wanted Hudson Crown approved before you could stop it.”
“You put your hands on my car.”
“I know.”
“You started this.”
“I know.”
Adrian moved toward him.
For one terrible second, Evan seemed to expect his brother to hit him.
Adrian didn't.
That was worse.
“You are going to confess.”
Evan looked up.
“To everything.”
“I'll go to prison.”
“Yes.”
“Adrian—”
“You wanted my chair?”
Adrian's voice trembled.
“You wanted my office? My authority? My life?”
He pointed toward the wheelchair.
“This is what your jealousy helped buy me.”
Evan lowered his head.
Then he whispered, “I'll confess.”
His phone rang.
Grace.
Evan answered immediately.
“Mom?”
No response.
Then Marcus's voice came through.
“Bring Adrian to Hudson Crown tonight.”
Adrian looked at Evan.
Marcus continued.
“Come alone.”
May you like
A pause.
“Or your mother won't leave the building.”
