Chapter 7 - Hudson Crown

The unfinished Hudson Crown tower rose above the Hudson River like a black skeleton.

Adrian had once dreamed of transforming it into affordable luxury housing with public waterfront access.

Evan and Marcus had transformed it into a monument to corruption.

Adrian arrived at 11:40 p.m.

Not alone.

Hannah was furious when he tried to leave her behind.

“You can barely walk ten yards.”

“I have the chair.”

“And Marcus has spent two years manipulating your entire family.”

“This is dangerous.”

“Yes. Which is why you're not going alone.”

Naomi coordinated with police outside.

Evan wore a recording device.

The plan was simple.

Get Grace out.

Get Marcus talking.

Do not improvise.

Naturally, everything went wrong.

Marcus was waiting on the thirty-second floor.

Grace sat tied to a chair.

Two armed men stood nearby.

Marcus smiled when Adrian rolled from the elevator.

“Hannah Brooks.”

He looked amused.

“The housekeeper.”

Hannah stared at him.

“The doctor.”

His smile faded.

Marcus explained everything with the arrogance of a man who believed confession no longer mattered.

Richard Cole had discovered his network.

Marcus needed time to destroy evidence.

Then Adrian found Peter's key.

Evan's childish sabotage gave Marcus an opportunity.

“I only needed one cut.”

Adrian's hands tightened.

“You nearly killed me.”

“But I saved you afterward.”

“You kept me disabled.”

“I kept you dependent.”

Marcus crouched in front of him.

“Do you know how easy powerful men become when you convince them their bodies have betrayed them?”

Adrian looked at him.

“You made one mistake.”

Marcus smiled.

“What?”

“You convinced me my legs were useless.”

Adrian locked his wheelchair.

Then stood.

Marcus's face changed.

Adrian had hidden the extent of his progress.

He took one step.

Then another.

Painful.

Unsteady.

But real.

“You never convinced me I was.”

Marcus backed away.

That was when Evan attacked one guard.

Chaos erupted.

Hannah ran toward Grace.

Naomi and police stormed the lower floor.

Marcus grabbed Adrian.

They crashed against a construction barrier.

Adrian's weak leg buckled.

Marcus raised a metal pipe.

Before he could swing, Grace slammed the wooden chair into him from behind.

Marcus stumbled.

Hannah pulled Adrian away.

Police flooded the floor.

Marcus ran.

He reached the temporary exterior walkway.

Rain had begun falling.

Exactly like the night of Adrian's crash.

Adrian watched Marcus reach the edge.

For a moment their eyes met.

Marcus stepped backward.

The railing broke.

He fell—

and caught a steel beam below.

He screamed.

“Adrian!”

Everyone froze.

Marcus dangled thirty stories above the ground.

“Help me!”

Adrian could have turned away.

Part of him wanted to.

Instead he lowered himself painfully onto the floor.

“Give me the safety cable.”

Hannah understood.

Together they secured Marcus until firefighters could reach him.

Marcus stared at Adrian after being pulled back.

“Why?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Because you don't get to decide what kind of man I become.”

Marcus Vale was arrested before sunrise.

So was Evan.

Grace voluntarily surrendered two days later for her role in the financial crimes.

The story exploded across every major newspaper in New York.

Cole Enterprises stock fell seventeen percent.

Three board members resigned.

Adrian's private medical information leaked.

Reporters camped outside the mansion.

And Hannah disappeared.

No warning.

No goodbye.

Only a letter on Adrian's desk.

You have your life back now. You don't need someone who entered it because you were wounded.

Adrian read it twice.

Then called her.

No answer.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Walter found him staring at the letter.

“Are you going after her?”

Adrian looked toward the wheelchair.

Then toward the cane Rebecca had given him.

He slowly stood.

May you like

“Yes.”

For the first time in two years, Adrian Cole walked out of his mansion through the front door.
