Chapter 14 - The Final Audit

Back in her private executive office following the summit, Evelyn sat at her desk reviewing the final quarterly financial summaries.
The subsidiary audits were complete. The corporate restructuring was finalized. The legal proceedings regarding her past marriage had been officially sealed and archived, closing that chapter of her life with finality.
Her phone chimed softly on the sleek marble desktop. It was a routine notification from the state prison system regarding the inmate registry—a final, administrative update confirming that Grant Whitmore’s processing and intake documentation had been permanently archived under standard federal offender protocol.
Evelyn didn't even open the notification. She simply swiped the screen dismissively, clearing the alert from her display.
Some numbers are simply too insignificant to audit twice.
Eleanor walked into the office carrying two glasses of sparkling cider, handing one to her daughter with a knowing smile.
