Chapter 8 - Echoes of the Past

Across town, in a dreary, damp basement apartment in Queens that smelled faintly of old cabbage and damp plaster, Grant Whitmore stared blankly at a flickering television screen.

His hair was unwashed, his jawline covered in a ragged, graying beard, and his designer suits had long since been pawned or seized to pay off immediate legal debts. The television news anchor was speaking in crisp, professional tones about the upcoming corporate expansion of Vale Meridian Group, accompanied by glossy B-roll footage of the company's newly appointed Chief Operating Officer stepping out of a sleek town car outside corporate headquarters.

Grant watched the screen with hollow, bloodshot eyes.

The woman on television looked nothing like the quiet, unassuming wife he had casually dismissed and ultimately betrayed. Evelyn wore a tailored emerald-green coat, her posture straight, her expression an impenetrable mask of absolute authority. Reporters shouted questions from behind velvet ropes, but she didn't even break her stride as she walked into the building, flanked by an elite security detail.

A bitter, choking laugh escaped Grant’s throat.

He had held the keys to an entire kingdom in his hands, sleeping beside royalty every single night, and he had thrown it all away for a fleeting moment of hollow validation with a woman who didn't even remember his name anymore. He had traded an empire for a cheap imitation, and now he was paying the price in absolute, irreversible ruin.

His phone buzzed on the cracked laminate table beside him. It was a notification from the court clerk regarding his upcoming sentencing hearing.

Grant didn't pick it up. He simply stared at the blank wall, listening to the drip of a leaky faucet in the kitchenette—a slow, relentless rhythm that reminded him of nothing so much as a ticking clock running out of time.
