Chapter 4 - The Descent

Grant Whitmore’s apartment smelled of stale takeout and sudden, crushing reality.
After being evicted from the upscale suburban house—which was legally owned by a subsidiary trust controlled by the Vale family—he had been forced to move into a cramped, depressing studio apartment near the industrial district. His bank accounts had been frozen pending an independent forensic audit by the firm’s legal department, leaving him with less than three hundred dollars in liquid cash.
His phone rang from the kitchen counter. It was a debt collector calling about the luxury car lease he could no longer afford. He let it go to voicemail, burying his face in his hands as the crushing weight of his arrogance finally settled over him.
In the span of one week, he had gone from a rising corporate executive with a beautiful pregnant wife and a glamorous mistress to an unemployed, financially ruined nobody living out of a cardboard box. He had traded stability, loyalty, and genuine care for a superficial thrill, believing he was the master of his own destiny.
Worse still, he had tried to contact Evelyn multiple times, only to find his number blocked on every channel. When he attempted to visit the hospital, security guards who looked like retired special forces operatives had politely but firmly escorted him off the premises before he even made it past the revolving doors.
Desperation gnawed at his stomach like acid. Without a reference from Whitmore & Associates—which had officially given him a termination classification of gross misconduct—no respectable firm in the city would touch him. His resume was radioactive. His professional network had vanished overnight.

Driven by a desperate, frantic impulse, Grant grabbed his coat and headed out into the autumn chill. There was only one person left who might listen to him, one person who might show a shred of mercy for the sake of their unborn child.
He needed to talk to Evelyn. And if Evelyn wouldn't see him, he would find Eleanor Vale.
