Chapter 13 - The Settlement Offer

By New Year’s Eve, the snow had turned the city into a sparkling wonderland of white and silver. Inside the hospital room, a small Christmas tree sat on the side table, adorned with simple glass ornaments my father had brought from our family home.

The door clicked open, and Marcus Vance stepped inside, holding a thin leather portfolio.

“Good morning, Anna. Justice Vance,” Marcus greeted us respectfully, offering a warm smile.

“What do you have for us, Marcus?” my father asked, setting his glasses down.

“A messenger dropped this off at my office ten minutes ago from David’s court-appointed defense counsel,” Marcus said, laying a single document on the tray table. “It’s a complete settlement proposal.”

I looked down at the paper. David’s signature—once bold, arrogant, and sharp—was now messy, cramped, and desperate.

“He’s offering to sign over full ownership of the suburban house, relinquish all claims to joint marital assets, agree to an immediate, uncontested divorce with zero alimony, and accept a permanent non-disparagement order,” Marcus explained. “In exchange, we drop the civil damages suit.”

I read through the clauses line by line. No fight. No messy courtroom drama. Just an unconditional surrender.

“He realizes he has no leverage left,” my father observed, scanning the document with an expert eye. “The firm fired him, his bank accounts are frozen under federal investigation, and his legal defense fund is empty.”

“Sign it?” Marcus asked, looking at me.

I picked up the pen, feeling the weight of the past three years lift off my shoulders with every stroke of ink. I signed my name cleanly, decisively, without a single tremor in my hand.

“It’s over,” I whispered, handing the pen back to Marcus.

“It’s just beginning,” my father corrected gently, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. “Your real life starts now.”
