Chapter 8 - The Gathering Storm at the Firm

The executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of Sterling & Hayes overlooked the frozen skyline of the city, glittering under a cold winter sun. But inside the room, the atmosphere was freezing.
The senior partners sat around the massive mahogany table, their faces grim. Henderson stood at the head of the table, clicking through a projector screen displaying a financial damage report that looked like a war zone.
“Let’s review the fallout,” Henderson said tightly, pointing to a red ledger line on the screen. “By 10:00 a.m., three major banking clients pulled their retainer accounts citing ‘reputational risk.’ The federal district court has officially flagged our firm for compliance audits. And the bar association has launched a full-scale audit of all junior associates hired under David’s referral pipeline.”
A murmur of anxiety rippled through the table.
“Can we fight the bar audit?” asked Robert, a senior tax partner.
“Fight the bar audit?” Henderson scoffed bitterly. “Robert, do you know who Arthur Vance is? He doesn't just influence the legal community; he is the legal community. If we fight, he won't just take David's license—he’ll dismantle this partnership brick by brick until we’re all practicing traffic law in a basement.”
“And David?” another partner asked quietly. “What’s his status?”
“Terminated. Expunged from the directory. Security is boxing up his desk as we speak,” Henderson said, tossing a set of office keys into the center of the mahogany table with a sharp clatter. “Furthermore, I want a full internal review of every person David brought into this firm. If anyone else enabled his behavior, they go too.”

The partners nodded in grim agreement. None of them wanted to be casualties of David Sterling’s catastrophic miscalculation.
David had spent his entire career believing that power came from titles, golf club memberships, and who you knew at the country club. He never understood that true power isn't loud, and it doesn't need to boast. It is steady, quiet, and absolute. And right now, that power was systematically dismantling every single thing David had ever worked for.
