Chapter 2 - The Silence Before the Storm

The kitchen felt suddenly airless.

David’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. The polished, arrogant attorney who had gloated about playing golf with the sheriff and mocking my helplessness was gone, replaced by a terrified man staring at a piece of glass in his hand as if it had turned into a venomous snake.

From the dining room, a chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. One of David’s senior partners, a man named Henderson whose approval David had spent three years groveling for, stepped hesitantly into the kitchen archway.

“David? Is everything alright? Who is on the phone?” Henderson asked, his eyes darting from David’s pale face down to me, curled on the floor in a pool of my own silent terror.

David didn't answer. He couldn't. His fingers were locked onto the phone, his knuckles stark white.

On the speaker, my father’s voice remained terrifyingly calm. There was no shouting, no parental rage that would give David an excuse to call him unhinged. There was only the cold, mechanical precision of a man who spent decades dismantling arguments and destroying careers for a living.

“Mr. Sterling,” my father said, every syllable deliberate. “Are you still there? Or has your courtroom confidence abandoned you?”

“Sir—Chief Justice—please,” David choked out, the titles tumbling out of his mouth in a frantic, undignified scramble. “There’s been a misunderstanding. Anna... she slipped. It was an accident. We were just—we were going to call someone—”

“You broke her phone,” my father stated.

David froze. His eyes widened in absolute horror as he realized how much my father had heard before he even spoke.

“You threw her phone against the baseboard,” my father continued, his voice echoing off the tile. “You threatened her with your political connections. And most importantly, you denied my daughter and my unborn grandchild emergency medical care. Henderson, is that you standing in the background?”

Henderson blinked, startled to be addressed directly by the most powerful judge in the country. “I—yes, sir. I’m Henderson. Senior partner at—"

“Henderson,” my father interrupted smoothly. “I suggest you and the rest of your associates pack your coats and leave Mr. Sterling’s home immediately. Because within the hour, every federal prosecutor, state licensing board, and major corporate client associated with your firm is going to receive a comprehensive review of your junior partner’s domestic conduct and professional ethics.”

The blood rushed in my ears, a roaring tide that threatened to pull me under. The cramp in my stomach twisted harder, and I let out a low, involuntary gasp.

Sylvia finally snapped out of her paralyzed state. She lunged forward, her face flushed with pathetic fury, pointing a shaking finger down at me.

“This is a trick!” Sylvia shrieked, her voice cracking. “She set us up! She’s a manipulative little liar! She’s a nobody from nowhere! David, hang up the phone! Call your sheriff friend right now and have her arrested for trespassing in her own home!”

David looked at his mother, then down at me, and for a fleeting second, the raw, ugly truth of what he had married into flickered behind his eyes. He wasn't looking at an orphan anymore. He was looking at the daughter of the man who could wipe his law license off the books before breakfast.

“Dad,” I whispered, the pain finally breaking through my resolve. “Please... the baby.”

The line didn't go dead. Instead, my father’s tone shifted from icy judicial authority to a sharp, commanding urgency.

“Anna, stay still. Look at me—listen to my voice. An ambulance was dispatched to your address three minutes before I answered this call. They are turning onto your street right now. Hold on for me, sweetheart. Daddy’s coming.”
