Chapter 11 - The Woman Waiting Outside the Gate

Dominic expected Elena.

Maybe Noah.

Possibly Gabriel.

He did not expect Mara.

When the gate opened, she stood beside an ordinary rental car wearing jeans and a gray sweater.

No dramatic limousine.

No crowd.

No photographers.

Just Mara.

Dominic stopped.

She smiled.

“You got skinny.”

He laughed.

“That is your first sentence?”

“I had eighteen months to prepare.”

He walked toward her.

Then stopped.

“Are you visiting?”

“No.”

“What about Seattle?”

“I resigned.”

His face changed.

“Mara—”

“Don't.”

“But your career—”

“I accepted a position at St. Catherine.”

“Because of me?”

“Partly.”

He looked troubled.

Mara stepped closer.

“People are allowed to consider love when making decisions, Dominic.”

“I don't want you sacrificing—”

“I didn't.”

Her voice sharpened.

“I loved Seattle. I learned a lot. Then St. Catherine offered me director of cardiac nursing.”

Dominic blinked.

“Director?”

“Yes.”

“That's…”

“Better.”

He smiled.

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

“And us?”

Mara looked at him.

“I thought we might begin with lunch.”

“Lunch?”

“You've been incarcerated eighteen months. I'm not moving into your house this afternoon.”

“I don't have a house anymore.”

“Convenient.”

Dominic laughed.

Then Mara kissed him.

Slow.

Warm.

Real.

When they separated, she whispered:

“Welcome home.”

Home.

The word nearly broke him.

Elena and Noah waited at the restaurant.

Noah had grown.

Dominic hated that immediately.

“You're taller.”

“That's generally how kids work.”

Mara looked proud.

“I taught him sarcasm.”

Dominic hugged Noah.

The boy held on tightly.

“You came back.”

“Yes.”

“Legally possible?”

Dominic laughed.

“Yes.”

Elena joined the hug.

For a moment, Dominic closed his eyes.

This was wealth.

Not warehouses.

Not accounts.

Not fear.

This.

Months passed.

Dominic joined Elena's rebuilt logistics company as compliance director.

No executive suite.

No controlling shares.

He insisted.

The company implemented independent audits, worker protections and transparent contracts.

Some former employees refused to return.

Dominic understood.

Trust could not be demanded.

Others came back.

Gabriel did not.

He opened a security consulting firm and seemed happier.

Noah visited Dominic's office after school.

Mara complained Dominic still drank too much coffee.

Normal life emerged.

Then one evening Dominic returned to Mara's apartment carrying groceries.

She was sitting at the table.

Serious.

“What happened?”

“Sit.”

His stomach dropped.

“Mara.”

“Sit.”

He obeyed.

She slid a small envelope toward him.

Inside was a key.

Dominic looked at it.

“What?”

“I bought a house.”

He stared.

“You bought a house?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted it.”

He smiled slowly.

“Good.”

She pushed the key closer.

“There's a second bedroom.”

“For Noah?”

“No.”

Dominic's heart stopped.

Mara looked suddenly nervous.

The fearless night nurse.

Nervous.

“You're asking me to move in?”

“I am considering allowing you to apply.”

He laughed.

“Mara.”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Dominic took the key.

Then stopped.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

That surprised him.

She continued.

“But I've learned certainty is overrated.”

Dominic smiled.

“From me?”

“Unfortunately.”

He kissed her.

They moved in together three weeks later.

It was messy.

Dominic organized everything.

Mara moved his organized things.

They fought about dishes.

He hated her alarm clock.

She hated that he checked locks three times.

But they stayed.

One rainy night, Mara came home from the hospital pale.

Dominic stood immediately.

“What happened?”

“Nothing bad.”

“Mara.”

She placed something on the table.

A pregnancy test.

Positive.

Dominic stared.

Then at her.

Then back.

He sat down.

Mara's face changed.

“Say something.”

Dominic's hands started shaking.

“I don't know how.”

“How what?”

“To be someone's father.”

Mara sat beside him.

“You've been Noah's father in every way except biology for eight years.”

“That's different.”

“Why?”

“Because…”

His voice broke.

“My father was terrible.”

Mara took his hand.

“And you spent your entire adult life learning what not to repeat.”

Dominic looked terrified.

“What if I'm not enough?”

Mara smiled.

“Then welcome to parenthood.”

He laughed through tears.

Then pressed his forehead against hers.
