Chapter 4 - The Father Who Came Back From the Dead

Dominic held the phone so tightly his knuckles whitened.
“What did you give Noah?”
Ethan laughed.
“Still straight to business.”
“If my nephew dies—”
“My son.”
Dominic froze.
Across the room, Noah watched him.
Mara immediately moved closer to the boy.
Dominic lowered his voice.
“You lost the right to call him that.”
“Did I?”
“You disappeared.”
“I survived.”
“You murdered Elena.”
Silence.
Then Ethan said, “That's what Gabriel told you?”
Dominic looked toward him.
Gabriel's expression hardened.
“Where are you?”
“Not yet.”
“What do you want?”
“The documents Elena gave Gabriel.”
“They don't exist.”
“Then Gabriel lied to you again.”
Dominic looked at him.
Ethan continued.
“Elena kept the originals.”
“Where?”
“If I knew, we wouldn't be talking.”
Dominic's pulse hammered.
“What does Noah have to do with them?”
“Elena hid something for him.”
“What?”
“Ask your nurse.”
Dominic turned toward Mara.
Her face changed.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan laughed.
“Interesting. She never told you.”
The line disconnected.
Dominic stared at Mara.
“What haven't you told me?”
“Nothing.”
“Mara.”
“I told you everything Elena said.”
“Did she give you anything?”
“No.”
Mara stopped.
Memory.
A detail.
Tiny.
Forgotten.
“Wait.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“What?”
“The bracelet.”
“What bracelet?”
“When Elena grabbed my wrist, she wasn't only holding me.”
Mara closed her eyes.
“She pushed something into my scrub pocket.”
Gabriel leaned forward.
“What?”
“I thought it was debris.”
“What was it?”
“A Saint Christopher medal.”
Dominic went completely still.
“Elena wore one.”
Mara looked at him.
“I kept it.”
“Why?”
“I didn't know who it belonged to until later. By then the case had closed.”
“Where is it?”
“At my apartment.”
Dominic immediately called security.
Mara glared.
“You are not sending your men into my home.”
“I wasn't.”
She stared.
Dominic sighed.
“I was arranging transportation.”
“Look at you learning.”
Gabriel muttered, “This is bizarre.”
Mara ignored him.
Hospital administration increased Noah's security.
Every medication required two-person verification.
Dominic, Mara and Gabriel drove to her apartment after sunrise.
Mara retrieved an old wooden box from her closet.
Inside lay the medal.
Dominic recognized it immediately.
“My mother gave this to Elena.”
Mara handed it to him.
He turned it over.
There was a seam along the edge.
Gabriel noticed.
“That wasn't there originally.”
Dominic used a pocketknife.
The medal opened.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Nobody spoke.
Mara whispered, “Your sister hid data inside her necklace.”
Gabriel looked grim.
“Smart.”
They accessed it on an offline laptop.
Files appeared.
Financial ledgers.
Photographs.
Audio.
And one video.
ELENA_FINAL.
Dominic couldn't click it.
Mara noticed his hand shaking.
“You don't have to watch now.”
“Yes.”
He opened it.
Elena appeared.
Alive.
Thirty-two years old.
Dominic made a sound Mara would never forget.
His sister looked directly into the camera.
“Dom, if you're watching this, something went wrong.”
Dominic covered his mouth.
Elena continued.
“Ethan has been moving money through Vale shipping accounts. But he's not working alone.”
Gabriel leaned closer.
“I don't know everyone involved.”
Elena's expression changed.
“But I know someone inside our family is helping him.”
Dominic froze.
“Our family?”
Elena continued.
“I suspected Gabriel. I don't anymore.”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“He met Ethan because I asked him to gather evidence. I was wrong about him.”
Dominic looked toward Gabriel.
Eight years of guilt passed silently between them.
Then Elena said:
“The person I'm afraid of is Uncle Victor.”
Dominic stopped breathing.
Victor Vale.
His father's younger brother.
The man who taught Dominic business.
The man who stood beside him at Elena's funeral.
The man who helped Dominic raise Noah.
The honorary chairman of Vale Logistics.
Mara whispered, “He's still alive?”
Dominic's voice turned hollow.
“Yes.”
The video continued.
“Victor is using Ethan to move money, weapons and stolen cargo through our legitimate shipping routes. I think he's planning to remove you and take control.”
Dominic stared.
Elena leaned toward the camera.
“If anything happens to me, protect Noah.”
Her eyes filled.
“And Dom…”
Dominic broke.
His sister smiled sadly.
“Don't become Dad.”
Dominic whispered, “What?”
Their father had been violent.
Controlling.
Feared.
A man Dominic spent his entire adult life insisting he had surpassed.
Elena continued.
“Don't make fear the only reason people stay loyal to you.”
Mara looked at Dominic.
The words struck him visibly.
“Because when everyone is afraid of you, eventually nobody tells you when you're wrong.”
The video ended.
Silence filled Mara's apartment.
Dominic sat completely still.
His sister had died warning him against the exact man he became.
Gabriel looked away.
Mara sat opposite Dominic.
He stared at the black screen.
“I built everything wrong.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You built parts of it wrong.”
“That's supposed to make me feel better?”
“No.”
“Then why say it?”
“Because if you tell yourself everything is rotten, you give yourself permission not to repair anything.”
Dominic stared.
Mara continued.
“Your sister didn't leave that message so you'd hate yourself.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she asked you to protect Noah.”
Her voice softened.
“She expected you to keep living.”
Dominic looked down.
Then his phone rang.
Victor Vale.
Dominic stared at the name.
Gabriel reached toward his weapon.
Mara shook her head.
“Answer normally.”
Dominic answered.
“Uncle Victor.”
“Dominic.”
Victor's warm familiar voice filled the room.
“I heard Noah had another episode.”
“Yes.”
“I'm coming to the hospital.”
Dominic looked at Mara.
“When?”
“Twenty minutes.”
Dominic's eyes hardened.
“Good.”
He ended the call.
Gabriel stood.
“I'll handle him.”
“No.”
Dominic looked at him.
“We do this differently.”
Mara's expression softened.
Evidence.
Police.
Federal investigators.
No revenge.
No warehouse.
No disappearing body.
For perhaps the first time in his adult life, Dominic Vale decided that truth would be more powerful than fear.
Then Mara's phone buzzed.
Hospital.
She answered.
Her face changed instantly.
“What do you mean he's gone?”
Dominic stood.
“What?”
Mara lowered the phone.
“Noah isn't in his room.”
Dominic stopped breathing.
“Where is he?”
Mara's voice broke for the first time since he had met her.
May you like
“They can't find him.”
And twenty minutes before Victor Vale was supposed to arrive at the hospital, someone had taken Noah.
