Chapter 8 - The Woman in Room 307

Dominic thought Victor was lying.

Mara did too.

Until investigators reopened the hospital records.

The problems appeared immediately.

Elena arrived at Mercy General without formal identification.

Severe facial trauma.

Emergency surgery.

A second unidentified female crash victim arrived thirty minutes later from another accident.

During a system outage, patient numbers were manually reassigned.

The records were a disaster.

The body released as Elena Vale had been identified through jewelry and clothing.

No DNA test.

No fingerprints.

Closed casket.

Dominic felt sick.

“How did nobody catch this?”

The investigator answered carefully.

“Because someone didn't want them to.”

Victor provided a name.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Retired trauma surgeon.

Living in Annapolis.

They found him.

Reed was eighty-one.

Terrified.

He confessed.

Elena survived.

Barely.

After surgery, Victor's men arrived.

Reed believed they intended to kill her.

So he changed her patient identity.

Moved her.

Then contacted a federal investigator he trusted.

Elena entered protective custody.

Dominic stared at him.

“For eight years?”

Reed shook his head.

“No.”

“How long?”

“Six months.”

“Then where is she?”

“I don't know.”

The federal investigator died five years earlier.

Records remained sealed.

Victor claimed Elena disappeared voluntarily.

Dominic refused to believe it.

“She would never abandon Noah.”

Mara agreed.

Something else happened.

They traced Elena's last known identity.

Emily Vaughn.

E.V.

The initials on Noah's medication.

Ethan had been sending a message.

Not Elena Vale.

Emily Vaughn.

The trail led to Pennsylvania.

A rehabilitation facility.

Then a small assisted-living community.

Room 307.

Dominic stood outside the door unable to move.

Mara stood beside him.

“You want me to go first?”

“No.”

His hand trembled.

He knocked.

A woman's voice answered.

“Come in.”

Dominic opened the door.

The woman by the window was forty.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

A scar along her temple.

She turned.

Dominic stopped breathing.

“Elena?”

The woman's gray eyes widened.

The same eyes as Noah.

“Dom?”

His knees almost gave out.

Elena Vale was alive.

Dominic crossed the room.

Then stopped inches from her.

As though touching her might make her disappear.

Elena reached first.

Her hands touched his face.

“You got old.”

Dominic made a broken laugh.

Then wrapped his arms around his sister.

Eight years collapsed.

He cried into her shoulder.

Mara turned away.

Giving them privacy.

Again.

When Dominic finally stepped back, one question overwhelmed everything.

“Noah.”

Elena began crying.

“Is he okay?”

“He's alive.”

Her knees weakened.

Dominic caught her.

“You knew?”

“I knew he survived.”

“Why didn't you come back?”

Elena looked toward the window.

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

She touched her temple.

“The crash caused a brain injury.”

Mara immediately understood.

Elena continued.

“I lost months.”

Memory.

Language.

Identity.

By the time she recovered enough to understand her past, the federal protection officer caring for her had died.

She tried contacting Noah.

Then received photographs.

Noah at school.

Dominic leaving home.

A message.

COME BACK AND THE BOY DIES.

Victor.

Elena stayed hidden.

Not because she wanted to.

Because she believed her son was being watched.

“Why not contact me secretly?”

“I didn't know who you trusted.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Gabriel.

Victor.

The organization.

Elena had no way to know.

“I became exactly what you warned me not to become.”

Elena touched his hand.

“I've followed the news.”

His eyes opened.

“You know?”

“You dismantled it.”

“Yes.”

She smiled through tears.

“Then maybe you finally listened.”

Dominic laughed and cried simultaneously.

Then he remembered.

“Noah doesn't know.”

Elena went pale.

“Does he remember me?”

“He knows everything about you.”

“Does he hate me?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he's spent eight years missing you.”

Elena covered her mouth.

The reunion happened the following day.

Noah entered Room 307 holding Mara's hand.

He saw Elena.

Stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Elena crouched slowly.

“Noah.”

His lower lip trembled.

“You look like the pictures.”

Elena broke.

“So do you.”

Noah looked at Dominic.

“Is that really Mom?”

Dominic nodded.

“Yes.”

Noah walked toward her.

Slowly.

Then faster.

Elena fell to her knees.

Her son crashed into her arms.

The sound she made was not quite crying.

It was eight stolen years leaving her body all at once.

Dominic turned away.

Mara took his hand.

He held it tightly.

Noah sobbed against his mother.

“You didn't leave me.”

“No.”

Elena kissed his hair.

“Never.”

“You came back.”

“Yes.”

Noah looked toward Dominic.

“Uncle Dom said people who love you come back.”

Dominic's face crumpled.

Elena looked at her brother.

“Sometimes,” she whispered, “they need help finding the way.”

Mara squeezed Dominic's hand.

For the first time in eight years, the Vale family stood in one room without a lie between them.

But one final reckoning remained.

May you like

Victor's trial.

And Elena Vale was about to become the witness who could destroy everything he had spent decades protecting.
