Birthday video.
Maren sewing.
Sorrel at two years old climbing onto her back.
Me behind camera saying:
“She’s ruining your seam.”
Maren:
“She is the seam.”
Terrible metaphor.
We laughed.
Sorrel cried afterward.
“I don’t remember her voice right.”
“That’s normal.”
“I remember Aurelia’s voice better.”
That hurt.
I could not fix memory.
We created no ritual to overwrite.
Sorrel watched ordinary videos.
Maren cooking.
Maren swearing at a broken vacuum.
Maren falling asleep with a book.
Not saint.
Mother.
