Chapter 7 - THE ACCOUNTANT
The male voice belonged to Nolan Price.
Forty-two.
Certified public accountant.
Not a criminal mastermind.
Aurelia’s former boyfriend.
That fact annoyed me more than it should have.
Nolan handled bookkeeping for Dane Family Support Services.
The audio:
Aurelia:
“He’ll sign after the wedding.”
Nolan:
“Not if the trust asks him directly.”
Aurelia:
“He doesn’t read statements.”
Nolan:
“That’s not the same thing.”
Aurelia:
“It has been so far.”
I felt physically ill.
Nolan:
“What about guardianship?”
Aurelia:
“Temporary first. Permanent if she keeps acting out.”
Nolan:
“You cannot make a five-year-old act out on paper.”
Aurelia laughed.
“Watch me.”
There.
Not subtle.
Still incomplete.
Did Nolan participate?
He hired counsel.
Then came in.
He admitted creating spreadsheets.
He admitted preparing invoices based on figures Aurelia gave him.
He denied knowing they were fake initially.
Eventually he became suspicious.
Why keep working?
Money.
Aurelia paid him $72,000 over nine months.
High for bookkeeping.
He also resumed an intimate relationship with her?
No.
Investigators found no affair.
Good.
No need for every fraud to become sexual betrayal.
He had dated her six years earlier.
Stayed friendly.
That explained trust.
Nolan said the reimbursement structure started legitimately.
Aurelia paid a nanny.
Submitted receipts.
Trust reimbursed.
Then she noticed Hawthorne often paid caregiver reimbursements without calling me if amounts stayed under certain review thresholds and documentation looked complete.
She began inflating.
Then created Dane Family Support Services.
Nolan helped register it.
Was that illegal?
No.
He believed she wanted formal business structure for care coordination.
When fake invoices appeared, he asked.
She said they reflected bundled costs.
He accepted too easily.
Then fabricated Oak Crest invoices.
Those he knew were wrong.
He admitted altering templates.
That was fraud.
He pleaded later to a limited conspiracy and false-record offense.
Cooperation.
No child-abuse charge.
He never touched Sorrel.
Separate roles.
Important.
Nolan gave prosecutors a spreadsheet.
Internal.
Not submitted to trust.
Columns:
ACTUAL COST.
BILLED.
REIMBURSED.
PENDING.
TARGET.
Total reimbursed to Aurelia-linked accounts:
$184,600.
Not all fraudulent.
Actual legitimate expenses she had advanced:
Approximately $68,000.
Potential improper benefit:
Around $116,000 before full audit.
Far less than the scary $386,000 submitted.
Good.
Numbers in correct size.
Then a row:
RESIDENTIAL PLACEMENT — future annual budget 180–240k.
Comment:
Guardian status required for broader approval.
There.
Long-term motive.
If Aurelia became guardian and successfully placed Sorrel in high-cost care, she could submit large budgets.
Would Hawthorne simply hand her $240,000?
No.
Trustee review.
Invoices.
Court.
Independent oversight.
But she believed a guardian position would improve leverage.
She was not going to own Sorrel’s trust.
She wanted a permanent administrative channel through it.
Then another column:
HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT — 96k.
Why?
Aurelia planned to pay Dane Family Support Services for “guardian household coordination.”
Self-dealing.
Likely rejected if properly reviewed.
But she had gotten away with smaller versions.
Success breeds stupidity.
Then Nolan said something that changed my understanding.
“She hated Sorrel before the money.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“The trust became useful later.”
“Why did she hate her?”
“She hated that every room still had Maren in it.”
My late wife.
The ragged drawings.
Photographs.
Sorrel saying:
Mommy used to.
Mommy liked.
Mommy said.
Aurelia was engaged to a widower and resented the evidence that the dead woman could not be outcompeted.
That motive did not excuse anything.
It explained the servant routine.
The apron.
The humiliation.
She wanted hierarchy.
She wanted Sorrel beneath her.
The fraud merely gave her a bureaucratic language for control.
Then Nolan handed over one final email.
Aurelia to him:
Once Hadrian signs permanent guardian delegation after wedding, I can finally run this house without a five-year-old vetoing everything.
Permanent guardian delegation.
Again, not actually something Hadrian could casually sign away forever.
