Chapter 25 - SORREL BECOMES A MOTHER

Sorrel became a mother at thirty-two.
A daughter.
Lena.
I did not move in.
I did not offer.
Important.
I brought groceries.
Asked before visiting.
Did not call myself childcare infrastructure.
One day Lena was four.
Sorrel asked me to watch her for three hours.
I felt absurdly nervous.
“What?”
“You’re acting like I handed you plutonium.”
“You were abused by a caregiver at five.”
“And you think I forgot?”
“No.”
“Dad.”
“Sorry.”
Lena wanted to help set the table.
She carried napkins.
Then plates.
Sorrel watched me watching her.
“Relax.”
“I am.”
“You look like you’re about to tackle furniture.”
“Normal grandfather posture.”
Lena dropped a spoon.
Nothing happened.
Then she asked for an apron.
Sorrel froze.
Only half a second.
I saw it.
She handed Lena a yellow baking apron.
Choice.
Play.
No symbolism required.
Later Sorrel told me:
“I heard Aurelia’s voice.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“Good.”
May you like
“I let Lena play.”
Healing is sometimes refusing to turn your past into your child’s rulebook.
