Chapter 12 - Cynthia Knocked on My Office Door

Cynthia changed slowly.
Not magically.
She lost most of the lifestyle she considered normal.
Sold designer bags.
Moved into a small apartment.
Got a job at an event-planning company.
For the first time at thirty, she paid her own electric bill.
She complained constantly.
Then less.
One afternoon, she visited the center.
“I owe you something.”
“Money?”
She laughed.
“Still terrifying.”
“What?”
“An apology.”
I waited.
“At breakfast, I enjoyed what was happening.”
Honest.
“I wanted Mom to put you in your place because I thought you were taking Julian away.”
She looked ashamed.
“And because you intimidated me.”
“Why?”
“You could say no.”
That surprised me.
Cynthia continued.
“I couldn't.”
There it was.
The family system in one sentence.
Beatrice punished resistance.
Cynthia survived through alliance.
Julian through enforcement.
Arthur through surrender.
Different adaptations.
Same house.
“I appreciate the apology.”
“Do you forgive me?”
“I don't know yet.”
She nodded.
“Fair.”
We eventually became something like friends.
Not sisters.
May you like
Not yet.
But something honest.
