Chapter 13 - Beatrice Finally Lost the Audience
Beatrice accepted a plea agreement involving fraud and conspiracy charges.
She avoided the maximum sentence because of age, restitution, and cooperation after Martin's testimony made denial impossible.
Before sentencing, she requested to speak with me.
I declined.
Then she wrote.
I read it.
Most of the letter explained.
Her father lost everything when she was young.
She grew up terrified of poverty.
Arthur's family represented security.
The mansion represented proof she would never be powerless again.
I understood.
Then she wrote:
When you said no at breakfast, I did not hear a scheduling conflict. I heard a woman I could not control entering a family I had spent decades controlling.
That was the first truly honest sentence I had ever received from her.
She continued:
I taught Julian that obedience was love. I taught Cynthia that agreement was safety. I taught Arthur that peace meant letting me win. Then I called all of it family.
I put the letter down.
Understanding.
Again.
Not absolution.
