Chapter 4 - The Shopping Trip That Was Never About Shopping

Cynthia called me.

I almost declined.

Then I answered.

“Claire?”

“What?”

She sounded different.

No breakfast smirk.

No superiority.

Fear.

“Mom wants me to sign something.”

“Don't.”

“You don't even know what it is.”

“Then definitely don't.”

Silence.

“What happened?”

She explained.

The private shopping appointment Beatrice demanded I attend had not actually been a shopping appointment.

There was supposed to be a meeting afterward.

With a family attorney.

Beatrice planned to present me with “routine post-marital estate documents.”

My stomach turned.

“What documents?”

Cynthia sent photographs.

One was a spousal acknowledgment regarding Sterling Heritage obligations.

Another contained language potentially waiving claims against Rowan related to the Oak Park property.

A third was worse.

It represented that I had been informed of Sterling Heritage's current financial condition before marriage.

I hadn't.

If signed, Beatrice could later argue I knowingly accepted or participated in certain transactions.

Breakfast had never been about shopping.

She needed me at that appointment.

My refusal threatened the plan.

That's why she demanded an apology.

That's why Julian became so aggressive.

He didn't know the details.

But Beatrice had trained him to enforce her expectations without asking why.

I stared at the documents.

My nineteen-hour marriage had almost become part of a fraud-defense strategy.

“Cynthia, where did you get these?”

“Mom's desk.”

“Why are you helping me?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because she asked me to sign one too.”

A document making Cynthia a guarantor on company debt.

Without explaining the extent.

Beatrice wasn't protecting her children.

She was distributing the blast radius.
