Chapter 13 - What Their Father Had Done

Michael didn't deny it.
Daniel placed the photograph on the table.
"Talk."
Michael sat.
Emma remained nearby.
Luke stayed outside.
This was family.
Daniel's father, Vincent Moretti, had discovered Vale's criminal network in the late 1980s.
But Vincent had his own problem.
Daniel.
At nineteen, Daniel had been arrested after a violent club fight.
A man nearly died.
Charges could have sent him to prison for fifteen years.
Vale had influence.
He made the case disappear.
Daniel stared.
"My father traded something."
Michael nodded.
"Access."
"To what?"
"Our family's trucking business."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
That small trucking company later became Moretti Logistics.
The foundation of Daniel's empire.
Vale had used it from the beginning.
"So all of this started because of me."
"No."
Daniel looked at Michael.
"He saved me."
"Yes."
"And gave Vale access."
"Because he was scared."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps destroying people they love because they're scared."
Emma touched his shoulder.
Michael continued.
"Dad regretted it."
"Did he try to get out?"
"Yes."
"Vale?"
"Threatened you."
Daniel looked down.
A pattern.
Fear.
Secrets.
Protection becoming cages.
His father hid truth to protect Daniel.
Michael disappeared to protect Daniel.
Luke betrayed Daniel to protect Sophie.
Anna tried to wound Daniel to save him.
Daniel himself had spent years controlling everyone he cared about because control felt safer than love.
He suddenly understood.
The villain wasn't only Vale.
Vale exploited fear.
But fear opened the door.
Daniel looked at Emma.
"I've done it too."
"What?"
"Controlled people because I was afraid."
Emma smiled slightly.
"Yes."
"You're supposed to disagree."
"No."
He laughed.
Michael looked between them.
"She's good for you."
Daniel sighed.
"Everyone says that."
"No. Everyone is afraid to say anything to you."
"Also true."
Daniel decided something that evening.
He would tell the truth publicly.
Not every criminal rumor.
Not private details irrelevant to anyone.
But enough.
Moretti Logistics had unknowingly—and sometimes negligently—enabled Vale's laundering.
Daniel would cooperate fully.
Pay penalties.
Compensate victims.
Michael supported him.
Luke did too.
Board members panicked.
Emma didn't.
"You'll lose money."
Daniel shrugged.
"I have enough."
"That's not what scares you."
He looked at her.
"What does?"
"People seeing you were wrong."
Daniel stared.
Then smiled.
"You're irritating."
"Consistently."
The press conference became national news.
Daniel sat at the podium.
No intimidating suit.
No dark entourage.
Cane beside him.
Wheelchair beneath him.
He told the truth.
"My company benefited from systems I should have examined more carefully."
Reporters shouted.
He continued.
"I spent years believing power meant never admitting weakness."
His eyes found Emma.
"I was wrong."
The room went quiet.
He announced victim funds.
Compliance reforms.
Full cooperation.
Questions came.
One reporter asked:
"Mr. Moretti, do you consider yourself a victim?"
Daniel paused.
"No."
The room changed.
"I was shot. My treatment was manipulated. Those things happened to me."
He looked directly at the cameras.
"But other people suffered because powerful men—including me—created cultures where nobody felt safe questioning us."
Emma's eyes filled.
Daniel finished:
"So no. I won't use what happened to me to erase what I should have done better."
That statement changed public opinion more than any lawyer could have.
Not completely.
Some people still hated him.
Fair.
But something inside Daniel loosened.
He no longer needed everyone to fear him.
That evening, Emma met him outside the mansion.
"That was brave."
"No."
"Yes."
"I've been shot."
"Different kind of brave."
Daniel looked at her.
Then took his cane.
Stood.
Emma smiled.
"What are you doing?"
"Walking."
"Where?"
"To you."
She stayed.
Daniel walked.
Slow.
Uneven.
Ten feet.
Twelve.
Fifteen.
No braces.
Only cane.
He reached her.
Emma cried.
Daniel touched her face.
"Again?"
She laughed.
"Always."
He kissed her.
This time, cameras outside the gate caught it.
Daniel didn't care.
The next morning, the photograph appeared everywhere.
CHICAGO'S MOST FEARED MAN WALKS TOWARD THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO FEAR HIM.
Luke showed it.
Daniel groaned.
Emma laughed for five full minutes.
But underneath the embarrassment, something beautiful had happened.
For years, Daniel's public image had been built around fear.

Now the photograph showed something else.
Hope.
