Chapter 4 - The Blue Box

Margaret Carter survived.

The shooter disappeared.

That was the good news.

The bad news was everything else.

"You can't stay here."

Emma stood beside her mother's bed.

"She's sick."

"Exactly."

Daniel's tone left little room for argument.

Emma turned.

"I'm not moving my mother into your mansion."

"Why?"

"Because people shoot at you."

"They just shot at her."

"Because of you."

Daniel went quiet.

Emma regretted it immediately.

But she didn't take it back.

Daniel looked toward the shattered window.

"Maybe."

The word surprised her.

He rarely admitted uncertainty.

Luke arrived with security footage.

"No clear image."

Daniel watched the recording.

A dark sedan.

A shooter across the street.

Professional.

"Trajectory?"

"Second-floor parking structure."

Daniel's expression hardened.

Same style as his shooting.

Luke saw the thought.

"So did I."

Emma looked between them.

"What?"

Daniel answered.

"The man who shot me used a parking structure."

"That doesn't mean—"

"No."

Luke nodded.

"But it's familiar."

Margaret woke later that afternoon.

For several minutes, she didn't recognize Emma.

Then she did.

"My baby."

Emma sat quickly.

"I'm here."

Margaret touched her face.

"You look tired."

"Everybody keeps telling me."

Her mother smiled.

Then saw Daniel.

The smile disappeared.

"No."

Emma turned.

"Mom?"

Margaret stared at him.

"He shouldn't be here."

Daniel rolled closer.

"Do you know me?"

Margaret's hands began shaking.

"No."

"Mrs. Carter—"

"Daniel."

Emma froze.

Her mother knew his name.

Daniel did too.

"You've met me?"

Margaret's eyes filled.

"They told us not to say anything."

"Who?"

"Doctors."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What doctors?"

Margaret looked around.

Fear returned.

"The blue box."

Emma grabbed her hand.

"Mom, where is it?"

Margaret frowned.

"Blue house."

Daniel's face changed.

"What did you say?"

"Blue house."

"Where?"

Margaret looked directly at Daniel.

"Your mother had roses."

Daniel stopped breathing.

His childhood home.

A blue two-story house on the South Side.

His mother had grown red roses beside the porch.

Nobody outside his family knew that.

Not even Luke had been there.

Daniel looked at Emma.

"We're going."

Luke immediately shook his head.

"Absolutely not."

Daniel turned.

"Interesting."

"It's an unsecured property."

"So secure it."

"We don't know who is watching."

"Then don't be watched."

Luke's jaw tightened.

"Danny."

Daniel stared at him.

Luke stared back.

Finally, Luke sighed.

"Two vehicles. No public route."

Emma crossed her arms.

"I'm coming."

"No."

"That's my mother."

"It's my house."

"It's our clue."

Daniel frowned.

"Our?"

"Yes."

"Don't get comfortable."

"Too late."

The blue house stood exactly where Daniel remembered.

Barely.

Paint peeled from the siding.

The porch sagged.

Windows were boarded.

The neighborhood had changed around it.

Daniel hadn't been there in thirty-six years.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Emma noticed.

"You okay?"

"No."

She nodded.

"Okay."

He looked at her.

Most people would have tried to comfort him.

Emma simply accepted the answer.

He appreciated that more than comfort.

Inside, the house smelled like dust and cold wood.

Daniel pointed toward the basement.

"There."

Luke went first.

Daniel followed using the stair lift security had installed temporarily.

Emma came behind.

The basement was worse than Daniel remembered.

Smaller.

Darker.

He pointed toward one corner.

"My father had a floor safe."

Luke removed rotten carpet.

Concrete underneath.

Nothing.

Emma looked around.

"Your mother had roses."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"Margaret mentioned roses."

He looked toward the rear wall.

The rose garden had been outside it.

Daniel rolled closer.

There was a narrow storage cavity.

They opened it.

Inside sat a faded blue metal box.

Emma whispered:

"That's it."

The lock had rusted.

Luke broke it.

Inside were medical records.

Photographs.

Cassette tapes.

And a sealed envelope.

Daniel's name.

He opened it.

The first page belonged to Dr. Nathan Mercer.

Daniel Moretti retains measurable neural response below the injury site.

Daniel stopped.

Emma read over his shoulder.

The injury is severe but incomplete. Permanent paralysis should not be assumed.

His hands began to shake.

Luke looked pale.

"Danny."

Daniel continued.

I strongly recommend immediate aggressive rehabilitation.

Another document.

A scan.

Then another.

The dates were from before Daniel had been discharged.

Emma whispered:

"They knew."

Daniel didn't answer.

He couldn't.

For two years, he had built his life around a lie.

Then Luke picked up another paper.

"There's more."

Medication records.

Daniel recognized the names.

Painkillers.

Muscle relaxants.

Sedatives.

Then an unfamiliar drug.

Emma read the note.

"High dose may suppress motor response."

Daniel looked at Luke.

"What?"

Luke went silent.

"Who prescribed it?"

Luke swallowed.

"Hanley."

The specialist Luke had recommended.

Daniel felt something inside him fracture.

Emma found a photograph.

A hospital hallway.

Dr. Hanley.

Nathan Mercer.

And a third man.

Sebastian Vale.

Daniel's longtime business partner.

Vale's hand rested on Hanley's shoulder.

The date?

Three days before Daniel's final prognosis.

Daniel whispered:

"Vale."

Luke looked at him.

"We don't know what that means."

"I do."

Vale had gained control of multiple Moretti companies after the shooting.

Not ownership.

Control.

Daniel had signed powers allowing Vale to manage projects during his recovery.

If Daniel had recovered quickly, those powers would have disappeared.

Emma touched his shoulder.

Daniel flinched.

Then relaxed.

"We need someone independent to examine you."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"What if they're wrong?"

"What if they're right?"

He looked at her.

Hope frightened him more than bullets.

Emma saw that.

She crouched.

"You don't have to believe you'll walk."

Daniel stared.

"Just find out whether somebody stole your chance."

The words settled inside him.

Then Luke's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

"What?"

Daniel watched.

Luke slowly lowered the phone.

"Sebastian Vale is at your mansion."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Why?"

Luke swallowed.

"He says he knows you found the box."

Silence.

Emma looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at Luke.

Nobody had told Vale.

Nobody except the people currently standing in that basement.

And suddenly Daniel wasn't wondering whether he had enemies inside his home.

He was wondering which person beside him had already betrayed him.
