Chapter 9 - The Traitor Under My Roof

Daniel locked the bedroom door.

Emma sat beside him.

Neither trusted the house anymore.

The letter continued.

Mercer described altered records.

Medication manipulation.

Suppressed neurological tests.

Then one sentence changed everything.

The scheme required help from someone with direct access to Daniel's home, medical schedule, and security movement.

Emma whispered:

"Luke."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"No."

"He has access to everything."

"So do others."

"Who?"

"Security. Medical staff."

"Luke recommended Hanley."

Daniel looked at her.

"I know."

"Luke knew Mercer questioned the diagnosis."

"I know."

"He went to St. Vincent's secretly."

"I know."

Emma softened.

"I'm not saying it's him."

"You are."

"I'm saying we can't ignore it."

Daniel looked away.

He had trusted Luke longer than anyone alive.

Michael had died.

His mother had died.

His father had been gone even longer.

Luke remained.

If Luke was the traitor, Daniel didn't know what that made the last eighteen years.

They opened the flash drive on an offline laptop.

Folders.

Financial records.

Hospital scans.

Audio.

One video.

Mercer appeared.

Tired.

Afraid.

"Daniel, I don't know whether this reaches you."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Your initial injury was severe but incomplete. Within forty-eight hours after surgery, you demonstrated preserved electrical response below T10."

Reeves had said the same.

"Three days later, those results disappeared from your chart."

Mercer held up documents.

"Dr. Hanley replaced them."

Emma whispered:

"We already know that."

Then Mercer continued.

"Hanley did not act alone."

Daniel's hands tightened.

"Payments came through Vale Strategic Holdings."

He expected that.

Then:

"Distribution inside the Moretti residence was handled by an individual listed as L.B."

Emma stopped breathing.

Luke Brennan.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Mercer continued.

"I have not confirmed the identity."

Daniel paused the video.

Emma touched his arm.

"Danny."

"Don't."

"L.B. could be someone else."

"Don't comfort me."

"I'm not."

He looked at her.

"I'm saying letters aren't proof."

Daniel nodded slowly.

They finished the video.

Mercer instructed them to find original financial records.

Then the final line:

The man who benefited most from Daniel's disability may not be the man who planned it.

The screen went black.

Daniel leaned back.

Emma frowned.

"Vale benefited."

"Yes."

"Luke also gained control."

"Operational control."

"You signed it over."

"I trusted him."

"Do you still?"

Daniel didn't answer.

At sunrise, Daniel ordered an internal lockdown.

Nobody left.

Phones surrendered.

Luke walked into the study.

"What's going on?"

Daniel tossed the printed transaction record onto the desk.

Luke read.

His face changed.

"What is this?"

"You tell me."

Luke looked up.

"L.B.?"

"Yes."

"You think that's me?"

"Should I?"

Luke stared.

Then laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

"Eighteen years."

Daniel's expression stayed cold.

"Eighteen years makes betrayal more valuable."

Luke stepped closer.

"I carried you out of the hospital when you refused the ambulance chair."

"I remember."

"I slept outside your room because you kept trying to pull the IV out."

"I remember."

"I buried your mother beside you."

"I remember everything."

Luke's voice cracked.

"Then look at me."

Daniel did.

"Did I poison you?"

Silence.

"No."

Luke shook his head.

"You don't believe that."

"I want to."

"That's worse."

He threw the paper down.

"Search everything."

"I plan to."

"Good."

Luke removed his phone.

Wallet.

Keys.

Gun.

Placed them on the desk.

"Search my office. My house. My accounts."

Daniel watched.

Luke leaned closer.

"But when you're finished, if I'm clean, you look me in the eye and tell me you were wrong."

Then left.

Emma watched Daniel.

"That looked real."

"It could be."

"You're exhausting."

"Thank you."

Security searched Luke's office.

Nothing.

His apartment.

Nothing.

Financial accounts.

One strange transfer.

$4.8 million from Vale Strategic Holdings.

Daniel stared.

Date:

Six weeks after the shooting.

Luke returned.

Daniel showed him.

Luke closed his eyes.

"Okay."

"What was it?"

"Payment."

"For what?"

"Daniel—"

"For what?"

Luke's shoulders dropped.

"My daughter."

Silence.

Daniel stared.

"You don't have a daughter."

"I do."

Luke sat.

Her name was Sophie.

Luke had become a father at seventeen.

He and the mother gave the baby up.

Years later, Luke found Sophie.

Quietly.

They built a relationship.

Sebastian Vale discovered it.

"He took her two days before your shooting."

Daniel's chest tightened.

"He told me to give Voss your updated route."

Emma covered her mouth.

Daniel went completely still.

"You gave him my route."

Luke's eyes filled.

"Yes."

Daniel's hand moved toward his gun.

Emma stepped forward.

Luke didn't move.

"He said he'd kill Sophie if I refused."

Daniel's voice became barely audible.

"And if you agreed?"

"He'd release her."

"What happened?"

Luke looked broken.

"He killed her anyway."

Daniel stared.

Vale paid Luke $4.8 million afterward.

Blood money.

Luke kept every dollar untouched as evidence.

"I've been building a case against him ever since."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you would've killed him."

Daniel said nothing.

Luke laughed bitterly.

"Exactly."

Daniel's anger had nowhere clean to go.

Luke had betrayed him.

Luke had been coerced.

Luke had still made the choice.

All could be true.

"Get out."

Luke nodded.

At the door, he stopped.

"L.B. isn't me."

Daniel looked up.

Luke turned.

"I know who it is."

Silence.

"Who?"

Luke's answer landed like another bullet.

"Leonard Blake."

Daniel's former private nurse supervisor.

May you like

A man who still worked inside the mansion.

And at that exact moment, every light in the house went out.
