Chapter 12 - The Man Who Never Asked About the Bruises First

I met Daniel Foster at a community legal fundraiser.
He was a pediatric dentist.
Completely unrelated to finance, trusts, mansions, or family empires.
Perfect.
He asked what I did.
I told him.
He didn’t recognize my name.
Also perfect.
We became friends.
Then more.
When I eventually told him the story, he listened.
His first question afterward:
“What do you want me to understand about you now?”
Not:
How bad were the bruises?
Not:
Did he really try to take your money?
Me.
Now.
I loved him for that.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Years later, we married.
Small ceremony.
Dad stood beside the cake.
Daniel whispered:
“Should I be concerned?”
“Only if you misbehave.”
Dad heard.
“Correct.”
Everyone laughed.
Margaret attended.
She cried during my vows.
May you like
Not because of Nathan.
Because she had lived long enough to see a wedding where nobody mistook marriage for ownership.
